Hi rbe,
It is an interesting theory and the maths do check out.
I know that from working with my guys in China on MM guitars, that manufacturers working on a tight budget don't like to waste any components, so your theory does make sense to me.
I have never put fiddle-edge Dobros through that thought process, but I have had these kind of discussions with friends who are National, Dobro, Regal, Supro experts about other components and come up with similar theories. So I agree that your theory is perfectly possible.

Hey guys! Just read Mike Lewis comment on the subject and like I wrote in my earlier post, there was absolutely no intonation problems at all using a standard cone and biscuit in my fiddle-edge!? I just dropped mine in there and took the usual steps to intonate a resonator guitar. Fixed in 10 minutes. So, maybe there's slightly different f-e bodies/necks that would cause such a difference? Also, I'm pretty sure my fiddle-edge would work with a standard spider, seems like it when I work with intonation on it.
