Following Mike Shipmans thread on Allen tail pieces and the feeling that most contributers would rather leave things as they were!, I would like to ask peoples opinions on screw on hand rests.
Having recently completed my own "Triolian/ish" resonator and setting up 2 cones and biscuits/saddles for it, I realised what a pain it must be to do that regularly (thinking of the Busker crew). It would be so much easier to have a removable hand rest,- wouldn't it?
My cover plate does have a removable rest but you have to undo nuts from the underside, Duh!!

Whilst it would be useful to have a NRP type removable handrest, I think I would have abused it and (at least partly) wrecked a guitar by now. TT

It certainly makes setting up resonator guitars a bit quicker and easier, but that is all, and how often do players setup their guitar.....
I decided not to go with removable handrests on MM guitars for two reasons; 1) is because the less one fiddles with the cone and biscuit, the better. I think that a removable handrest would encourage people to touch what doesn't need touching. 2) because I think that many would end up like Telecasters without the pickup cover. A single cone resonator guitar with no handrest is sooner or later, going to get damaged. I know that a few players choose to remove theirs, but that is up to them and is not something I would encourage.
That is why I don't think it is a good idea to have removable handrests.

I`ve made several resos, some with removable rests, and yes is does make setting up much quicker, but once set they have not been removed. Its another thing that could cause a buzz if not done well. (mine had threaded plates soldered under the cover) If your doing a `one off` then go for it, but I think Micheals reasons are very sound on a production models. PT
