Hi, anyone got any idea where I can get a offset spider for a fiddle edge Dobro( I have a modern off set spider which works but it seems to be made for a square neck (made very heavy & with a very high & wide bridge slot .) I had the chance to see a vintage spider & it is made a lot lighter..

I got mine from Beard. It seems to work OK for me, wide slot too, so maybe you got yours there? It took ages to get here though and I was stiffed with import tax. TT

I got mine from Janet Davis.the problem I have is that the sides of the slot are high and the spider has a high arch to it & there is not a lot of bridge (about 1/8")

Yours is probably a Beard. I think he is the the only one that currently makes one. Finding an original might be very difficult. The fact that the Beard spider is not working for you is probably because the neck angle is no longer correct. You also might find that the top of the guitar has collapsed a bit too. If the strings are not to close too the hand stap, then a neck set will solve the problem. If you are feeling really lucky, try to locate a short-leg, offset spider. That will solve your problem too.

I dont think its the neckset or the body as a friende let me try his vintage spider in it and it was fine. The spider I have is very overbuilt and heavy

This is the beard offset. It seems fairly lightly built to me. The wide slot is 'overcomable'. Does yours look like it? TT Attachments:

It looks the same but I had to file the legs down as they were touching the coverplate

My body is for a 10.5 biscuit cone. I put in a 1" (or so) strip of wood round the well for a dobro cone to sit on, so it probably sits a bit lower than yours. TT

I don't know how the early Dobros differ from the older newer ones like yours (I think mine is a bitsa anyway). If you send me an email address, I will send you a few pics. I inherited the body from Colin Brooks, and at some time it had had holes for controls drilled in it and a couple of rhinestones attached to the front. I got the neck that came with it but it had been carved like a totempole and painted. The headstock looked like the large headstock of a Hofner Committee grafted on, and a brass plate put over it, and Hank special written down the neck. The body is brass and looks like a Regal Leader, but there is no sign that it has been plated at any time, the brass is lacquered like a trumpet. I think that the work to the old neck may have been done by a chap called Les Western in the 60's (I once saw a style N that he had done similar things to)

Do you have the original lugged, stamped cone in it, or a spun cone? And for proper intonation you need the offset spider (not all fiddle-edges do)?

Hi, the cone is a replacement.I inherited the body from a friend who had brain cancer. The cone and spider are in his house somewhere but have not come to light as yet(he was sopmeone who collected anything and everything)
