My Republic Tricone came with one installed. I've never been able to get any volume out of it. You can hear it but it's not much (if any) louder than the guitar itself. I assume it needs a pre-amp? Any suggestions on what to use?

Hi Gaucho, Yes you need a preamp,i use an Award Session MixMatch...but any decent preamp will do the job. I am afraid i never had any good sound out of my Schatten Tricone pickup no matter what preamp and PA system i used.I know they have a solid reputation and some may disagree with me..this is only my experience with one. I always found it muffled very quiet and when turned up it had back ground noise,i had it checked it was fine. Took it out in the end and replaced it with a K&K twin spot which i split and put one spot in the same place where you attach the Schatten. With a preamp i was amazed with the result as the pickup is not designed for this and was just an experiment.I now get a very close tricone sound when plugged in, works for me anyway.
