I recently scored a nice Gretsch Synchromatic acoustic archtop. Can anyone suggest a good pickup? I like the look and description of the Kent Armstrong floating ones, but don't really know anything about them. The prices I've seen vary greatly. I know some are handmade, are there Asian produced versions as well? I'm not too picky about maintaining the acoustic tone when plugged in. I'm going more for Fred McDowell than Wes Montgomery!

Hi Gaucho,
Nice looking guitar. I am not the person to advise you about pickups, but I would think there is an Asian version that is cheaper.

I put a Kent Armstrong slimline hum bucker on my 1950 Supertone arch top - perfect for that Eddie Taylor/Jimmy Rogers early 50's sound played through a small valve amp.

Hi Phil, thanks for the comment. Did you go for the hand wound or the cheaper, mass produced version? I'm guessing there are 2 versions as I see them on-line priced at around $150 US and then I see some that look the same for about 1/2 that. They are all Kent Armstrongs and the same model, but there's no differentiation that explains the price difference that I can see. The Benedetto looks good also. I've only seen demos of these pickups played jazz style and they sound great for that. Anyone use them for bottleneck blues?

I've often considered replacing the stock floating pup on my Heritage Sweet16 with Jason Lollar's take on the "Charlie Christian" Perhaps not appropriate on a Gretsch, but what a pick up!

Cheapo version Kent Armstrong, the guitar's not worth a lot! I've a friend with a Benedetto on his guitar, sounds great but it was expensive.
