Whilst not really comparable to the Zoom H4N due to the 100 odd squid price differential, this new Olympus LS-100 does do 8 tracks. Interestingly, it also has the facility to meter for and correct phase errors between the two mics. This can only up the ante for Zoom? www.thomann.de/gb/olympus_ls_100.htm

I recently got a Tascam DR100. It was about $70 less than the Zoom H4n (which I also use for video production) and it has very comparable specs. It also comes with a remote control which is very handy and is a 60-70 dollar option on the Zoom. I really like the Tascam a lot. At least as much as the Zoom.

The Tascam certainly looks interesting, I was unaware of its existence in the Tascam range. I'll certainly include it amongst my options. Seems that this Olympus may only record in stereo despite managing 8 tracks. The Zoom can manage 4 tracks simultaneously? Since I struggle with mono (!) that's not an issue for me....;<D It does have a robust casing though, and the microphone phase metering and correction must be (for now at least) a USP. I think I read that it has some enormous dynamic range way over 100dB. This is very good for recording "loud" sound sources? I need to start dropping heavy hints soon in time for my birthday!
