Hi, I have two fiddle edged Dobros. One is up and running The other one is still a work in progress and is a bit of a problem The well set up one is a steel porthole model, and the problem one is a Regal made F hole model. I have got an offset spider for the Regal, but it seems much heavier and thicker than the one in the Dobro and the cast bridge (the slot for the saddle is a lot higher), so there is only about an 8th of an inch of wood showing over the top. I have tried the cone assembly from the Dobro in it and found that the well in the Dobro is much deeper, is this usual? I had thought to have the spider ground down, but don't know if it's feasible I am wondering if it should have a Lugged cone & a spider to go with it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Chris.

Hi Chris,
I understand your question, but cannot answer it with confidence. I would suggest you call Mike Lewis at Fine Resophonic in Paris and ask his advice. If you would like his contact details, PM me and I will send you his number.
Shine On Michael.

My short spider = 1.5 cm from base to top of bridge. Lugged cone lugs about 1/3 cm lower than rim. Any help? The 'lug' sound is quite different though - sweeter but significantly less bass. TT
BTW - If you ever do get a lugged cone for it, I'd really llike to hear the difference between those two dobros. Would you take them both to a gig or something? TT

If I remember well, I've already red that the lug cones were only found on Regal made guitars, because of a different height (or depth) of the coverplate (or was it the height between the rim and the "inside top" of the coverplate ?!)... Do you think that this eventuality could explain your problem ? My M32 has a lug cone with a long spider bridge (I believe that this combination is original !!), and it fits and sounds good. If it can helps in any way, here are some pictures of the one & what I believe to be the only opening of the coverplate: s628.photobucket.com/albums/uu3/alekzoo/DOBRO%20M%2032/?albumview=slideshow
