Can anyone recommend any clubs in New York City. We're having our first trip over next month & could do with some pointers if anyone can help. I've looked at BB Kings club and how lucky are we, that famous delta blues band Hermans Hermits are on. ( in other 'good' news they've shut the statue of liberty to visitors - sigh )
Thanks , Bob

i have just had a mate of mine out to stay for a few day's who has just returned from a week in new york he visited B.B. Kings club & while he said that yes it does have bands like hermans hermits etc it does also feature blues bands & muisicians ,he is also a harp player in a bluesband called killing floor who have been arouind on & off since the late 60's ,but he was saying the economy in the U.S. is as bad as here & if that is how they are getting by untill there is a bit of an upturn good on them it is not as if they are passing them off as a blues band is it & people are not forced through the door.

Thanks for that guys, I wasn't critisizing the BB King club for putting Peter Noone on, it was more 'just my bloody luck' - we have a one off trip to NY to see some blues stateside..etc
I suppose we'll just have to do it again ....
Thanks again. Bob

Hi Bob,
I am sure you will find some blues being played in New York City, but much like London, Paris and other major cities, blues is not fashionable and you have to know where to find it. There is much more live blues in the provinces and in the surrounding areas of major cities. Having said that, I am sure that when you get there and ask around, you will find some small venues with some good live blues being played.
When you return we would be interested to know any places you find. Have fun!

Hey Bobbysox:
If you want blues in the US, NY is not the place. Obvious choices would be Memphis, Mississippi, and Chicago. Gotta go to the source.

OK I'll fess up , it's a shopping trip for Mrs BobbySox and I couldn't persude her that the shops in Chicago are better than NY. ( like I said , we'll have to try again ) .
we'll find something.
Thanks again though.

Hey Bob ~ pop down to Greenwich Village & look up Alex at Matt Umanov Guitars (273 Bleeker Street).....everyone involved in the shop is a slide guitar nut and will most certainly give you the best tips on where to see blues in NYC Slide On! Ian.

Sorry - I meant to update this, The Terrablues club on Bleeker street claims to be the only remaining blues club in New York. It's a very friendly club, the drinks weren't extortionate and I wish we'd gone there a couple of nights earlier because we'd have come back. We saw Junior Mack doing a couple of stunning solo sets to half a dozen people, and a good band who's name I forget. BB.King's Lucille's Grill have some interesting bands on, we saw the Jon Paris band & guests who were great. The food however was fantastic. Thing that struck us was that both venues were fairly empty, I thought there'd be a bit more local support. I haven't been to a blues club here that's been as empty.
