HI Everyone I am interested in putting a nut raiser on my Busker ' Deco ' Tricone as since I am heavily into playing my weissenborn , this I hope, will make a wonderful, cheap lap steel guitar. Has anyone had a go at doing this to one of their reso guitars ! ........ Just a few things I need to clear up before I do it, do I have have to do anything to the saddle ( I hope not ) . What do I do to get this thing on , obviously loosening the strings , but could this have an effect on the set up of the guitar, something I do not want to alter. Would I need to put a new set of strings on !. And finally I notice on my Deco that the plastic truss rod cover plate is bang up against the nut , would I need a gap between this and the edge of the cover plate for the nut raiser to slot into, which will mean having to unscrew it an move it a tad.
Regards Growler

Hi Growler,
You will need to remove the truss-rod cover (or move it) to fit the nut raiser, but that is the only adjustment. It will not affect the setup or anything else. I have used them on many guitars and never had a problem.
I don't know who makes them these days, but the last good ones that I know of, were made and sold by the LRC and have the crown (King Slide) logo stamped on them.

HI Michael thanks for quick response Here is pic of nut raiser by Eaglemusic , it is their own brand made of brass and apparently does not damage the guitar due to the rounded edges. I like the the message you see on the pic ....... ' Gibson guitar does not come with the nut raiser '. Finally Michael , how can I keep the string tension on the saddle , possibly with a capo as I do not want to move anything. Regards Growler

Hi Growler, Those bits of angled brass & steel are not good. They are a cheap & easy way of making them, but they are not the correct shape. There are quite a few brands that all look much the same. You should get an old one. Here is a link I found to a good one on eBay. cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEAT-GROUP-3-ANTIQUE-GUITAR-RISER-NUTS-LAP-GUITAR-/390249279211?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item5adcab6eeb#ht_2632wt_907If the link doesn't work, search eBay.co.uk for: NEAT GROUP OF 3 ANTIQUE GUITAR RISER NUTS - LAP GUITAR They all mark the guitar a little. I don't see how that can be avoided, any gasket like paper or card will affect tone. To fit without disturbing anything >loosen off all strings except the D & G, then loosen them just enough to slide the nut riser into place >job done! Good luck, Shine On Michael

HI Michael just bought this one on E-bay, I hope this one will do the trick HAWAIIAN GUITAR EXTENSION NUT Convert just about any guitar for Lap-style playing Patented in the early 1920's and still the best design on the market, this nut extender simply sits over your existing guitar nut, raising the action to allow playing with a bar, and equally importantly increasing the nut width and string spacing to facilitate clean bar work in the lower positions. The conversion is non-permanent and will not damage your instrument. This is the quickest, simplest and cheapest way to set-up just about any acoustic or electric 6-string guitar for lap-style playing. So if you've ever fancied trying to play lap-style, now you can, for less than 7 quid!. (Though you'll need a tonebar or slide too) This is not just a piece of bent metal like some nut raisers, but is a precision Aluminium casting which is light and durable, and features accurate string slots. Overall width 48mm. String spacing between 1st and 6th strings 41.5mm. Made in the USA. Regards Growler

Steverino. My nut raiser arrived in the post yesterday , and it is exactly the pattern in your diagram you posted. I fitted it straight away onto my Busker Deco , a few cranks and groans as I was tuning it up since it has not been detuned since the day I bought it 2 years ago, tuned it to open C ......... it really sounds good. Incidentally, if Michael does not mind me telling you where I got this one from. it was ordered from a company called ' Rothesay Music ' in Scotlland. I ordered it via e-bay . the price was only 6 quid !........ the other one illustrated on this thread, the one Michael did not recommend, was twice the price ( this has been given to my 6year old daughter to put on her Uke). This is well worth a look in if anyone is interested in a good authentic nut raiser ......... he had 6 left.

I got one a while ago. Far better than the bent metal strip kind.
But you'd better get em quick cause Paul T at Rothsay Music is going to be having to re-order a whole sack of 'em pretty soon, what with Michaels new DVD!

Hi Growler,
I think I would remove the truss rod cover to get the nut sitting on the headstock.
