I've been practicing with fingerpicks for a few weeks now & I have become more comforatable with them, but I've noticed that I'm putting them on at a slight angle to my nails, so that they're more aligned to the strings when my picking hand is in position. ( I've rewritten this last bit a few times - I hope you know what I mean ).
Is this OK , or should I have the picks parallel to my nails?
I'm just worried that I'll be practicing myself into bad technique.
I'm using Dunlop plastic fingerpicks & a John Pearce thumbpick.
Thanks, Bob

I had to put my picks on to have a look When playing comfortably my pics are not exactly paralell with my nails but at a slight angle. I've been playing guitars with dirty strings this morning to check set-ups and the marks on my fingers are in the same place I position my fingerpicks - not surprising really ;D Robin PS - I expect the answer to this will be slightly different for each player

Hi Bobbysox,
We all have our own ways of wearing them and as long as they are on the right way round, rather than looking like a set of Halloween witches nails, and they are doing the job required of them, then they are on correctly. The rest is down to practice and getting used to them.
Over time the edges of the picks will wear into a shape that suits your playing style and hand position. A set of plastic picks lasts me a very long time, once I have a good set I treat them like gold dust.

I have a white JD set and a 'tortoiseshell' JD set which I keep with me at all times. I find if I'm doing a long gig (eg a night in a pub) my hands get heated up and thus heat up the plastic so the picks start slipping. . I've been known to bemuse bar-persons by asking for a glass of iced water and dipping the 'hot picks' in for a few moments to cool 'em off! Mine go at a slight angle too: it's just what's comfortable and, as Michael says, everyone is different..
I used to use acrylic nails but I've pretty much given up on them and use picks all the time: it feels... liberating!
Cheerily,
Gerry C
