Michael, I think you have just tapped into a new side to the act for 2010, there must be an old dusty bin knocking around in the thames TV prop room which could double for the talking steel guitar and I can see Ed wearing the goodies style flat cap "Ekkie thump style", next thing you might have a novelty number one on your hands "Blues Christmas!" Good stuff on a serious note, there is lots of this stuff in the archives,Hawaiian, ukulele all with great musicianship but with a humerous thread none the less. Regards Lee

Lee, I have been working on it for weeks! It'll be the follow-up to my Zingzillas appearance.

Personally, I'd like to see you & Ed fronting a band like that! Despite all the clowning, those guys could play... Were there any other Hawaiian-style players who were also big-band leaders?
Put a little tap right in my shoe!

Me too, I would love to put a big band project together. Gerry, there were many steel guitarists who led big bands, but whether or not they stepped out in front to conduct in that way I cannot answer as I have not seen film of them. I have seen still pictures of Sol Hoopii, Lani McIntire and Ralph Kolsiana, out front conducting.
We don't have enough conversations on this forum about Hawaiian steel guitar. MORE HULA TALK!!!!

That's a great clip of film. Pete Drake was a wonderful steel player whose playing we have all heard on numerous hit records. The ones that immediately spring to mind are Lay Lady Lay, the Nashville Skyline album, All Things Must Pass album and Stand By Your Man. I have always enjoyed his playing.
Although it was Alvino Rey that was the first use the voice box in the 30s with a steel guitar, it was Pete Drake's talking steel guitar playing in the 60s that influenced & inspired Peter Frampton, Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh and others in the 70s.
Good stuff!

I have GOT to get me one of those!!
On a slightly sideways note: Michael, is your DVD on lap-style playing in the pipeline? I may have the chance of acquiring a squareneck Dobro-type guitar in the near future...

Hi Gerry,
This morning I have been going through the final edit to make sure everything is ready for production. The DVD, 'An Introduction to Lap Steel Guitar' will be available very soon, two to three weeks I hope.
Get that Dobro!!!!!

I am playing my Fine Resophonic Tricone in the Intro' to Lap Steel Guitar DVD. There is no connection with the release of the DVD and a new MM model. Nice try Shine On Michael.
