Steve,
I recently had a quick look on the web for one of these in the UK, but did not find anything, a couple of nut/saddle suppliers told me they never get anything this big. My search was not that exhaustive, I found a couple of other bits I wanted, so ordered from Beard. As I write this am waiting for delivery. I was going to try Dave King, but never got around to it.
Good luck
Mel

For a begining Dobroist the next question is - what is the best height above the finger board at the first fret ?

Thanks Ken. I had seen the Hobgoblin blank but it's not big enough for my needs. I'm embarked on a crazy project to convert a knackered cheapo dreadnought into a 'dobro style' squareneck. I have built up the sides of the neck and need the blank to be around 60mm long to cover the full neck width. Obviously I'm not going to have the string spacing that wide but I think it will look odd if the nut is smaller than the neck width. Looks like an order to Beard is on the cards.

A 'green' alternative is to visit your local butcher and see if he's got any flattish bones (shoulder blades) you could recycle

I get my bone nuts from an ebay shop called AngelSound. All their bone blanks are oversize, whic suits me, but I think they also do some huge chunks of the stuff. Very good prices too, and nice folks.

Once you've made your bone nut, and are happy with it, if you want it to be less 'white' you can pop it in a cup of black tea for a few minutes, it will come out a nice, aged pale brown..

I quite like the DIY option from a piece of shoulder bone, aged in black tea.
Has anyone conducted a controlled experiment on the relative tonal merits of pork, lamb or beef shoulder bone or should I just take pot luck?
Thanks for the heads up on Angel Music Andy. I couldn't see anything that was quite tall enough (it needs to be 0.75 inches high) but they have other bits and bobs that could be useful to me.

Steve,
Just to let you know that I, finally, got my large bit of bone from Beard - the delay was due to the postal service. Its fine, very large - 7mm thick. But easy to shape and hits the spot. I was impressed with the service from Beard, who helped to track it down in the postal system.
regards
Mel

Just in case anyone needs to get a bigger nut blank, you can very successfully use superglue to stack nut blanks and then shape them - cynoacrylate is used for glueing bones back together by vets and surgeons
