Hi
My TDK thermal CD printer has died. This printed very small font text onto blank silver CDs and worked well for me.
I am undecided as to getting another thermal printer, or getting an ink jet printer which prints CDs. Does anybody use the latter, such as a Canon ip4700, and if so how good is it at getting lots of text, rather than a pretty picture, onto a blank CD.
I am keen to buy soon, to avoid the likely VAT rise following today's election!
Many thanks
Barry

Hi Barry, I got a Canon IP4600 about 6 months ago which I assume is the model before the IP4700. It prints text very well on white printable CDs and is more reliable and better print quality than the Epson printer it replaced. I doubt it'll print ok on silver discs but I could try it for you. The inks are pretty expensive if you buy the Canon cartridges, and they don't last as long as the Epson ones did. You can buy cheaper generic cartridges for it, but I've found the quality ain't good. If you let me know the font and size of the text you want to print I can try it for you and let you know how it comes out.

IMHO, as long as the silver CDs are printable, they should easily show high contrast printing - not sure about pics though. Choice of printers is somewhat subjective, but my feet are firmly in the Epson camp - just updated to an Epson FX710W, and the CD handling is vastly superior to my previous 5 year old Epson. The only issue i have is the somewhat clunky nature of the Print CD software, it "does what it says on the can" and no more, no frills. As regards ink, I woud always advocate originals - printing a lot of photos, the ink and paper match is without equal - yes its more expensive than replacement ones, but results are worth it. Hope this helps IAN

I have a Hewlett Packard D5460 which prints VERY well onto printable CD's. I would have thought the ink would just slide off the silver ones.

Thanks for this.
As I have very many silver disks I shall get another thermal printer, but I am grateful for the comments on ink jet printing onto white dics.
Bill, does the Cannon print well in Courier 10, which is I think as small as I need to go? Thanks for doing this.
Many thanks to all

Sorry Barry, I'd forgotten that I'd put some of those cheaper inks in my printer, as, cheap skate that I am, I had a load of scores to print out over the last month which having been using up all my ink. Consequently all the blacks are coming out faint and all my colours seem to be different shades of pink. But I am sure that Courier 10 would print well on a printable disc without any trouble using the proper inks.
