Perhaps we should start a separate thread about Hawaiian Steel Guitar music Sounds good to me. I'd certainly like to see one. Since getting a square neck dobro-style guitar around a year ago (and in the wake of a pesky shoulder injury) I've found myself listening to all sorts of stuff that I'd not paid attention to before just to hear what sorts of things people have done on and with steel guitar and I've become quite fond of some of the Hawaiian style stuff I've heard. (I love the Hawaiian steel guitar sound, but in truth I haven't learnt to love the traditional vocal style so much yet... but I might given time) Here's a spot of Jim and Bob - luvly

Jim & Bob are special. Their music is superb. Listen to the final guitar solo in their recording of Song Of The Range and you will never be the same again.
What you say about the old style Hawaiian vocals is valid by today's tastes in music. The Catfish CD that I put together was done very much with that in mind. So although there is some singing on the album, most are instrumentals. Some of the traditional Hawaiian vocal styles are incredible, but do take an acquired taste to really appreciate them. The Kalama Quartet's vocal harmonies are other-worldly and extraordinarily beautiful, and Sol Hoopii could swing like %^&$!!!!
Shine On Michael.

I went looking online for the Hawaiian steel guitar sampler - 'Classic Slide Guitar Volume 3 - Acoustic Hawaiian Guitar Masters' KATCD222.- that Michael mentioned (in another thread) he'd put together for Catfish Records a while ago. I couldn't find a copy to buy and with Catfish no longer in business it could be a while before one turns up, but I did find a music info site where you can listen to it: jukebox.au.nu/retro_grooves/hawaii/roots/various_xxxx_classic_slide_guitar_vol_3/A great selection, just makes me want a copy even more...
