Hi All
About 15 years ago i lived and gigged loads in Munich, and had an American pal who was also a professional musician Basically in Germany he had some type of insurance he paid into each month , if he had a bad month as a musician, the insurance would pay his rent and give him a little bit of money to help out etc Thats the basic story What i want to know is this Is anyone aware of any similar type of thing ?? i realize it sounds strange but I'm just wondering

I know that Combined Insurance Company of America had (might still do?) a policy to cover loss of earnings for persons injured in circumstances other companies wouldn't even look at.
I have a no exclusions injury policy with them for when I go racing.
To be honest, the plan as described sounds more like a managed personal savings fund. I'd have thought it would have been easier to be a miser and shove any spare cash into a savings account for the harder times, but that's probably a too simplistic way of looking at it.

I would think that insuring musicians for 'hard times' months would not be the greatest choice of business plan Actually this highlights an interesting subject, which is that Germany and some other European countries put far more money into the arts than we do here in the UK. I have heard of musicians in other European countries being able to sign on in a bad month. Whether that still happens, I don't know. Shine On Michael.

Pretty symptomatic of the widespread UK attitude to musicians, which can be summed up in the question "When are you going to get a proper job?" Hence the deluge of legislation in the last few years to make even more difficult the life of the working musician. And it comes from politicians who DO, of course, have proper jobs.... GRRRRRR!!
Rant over! (Just a bit grumpy today!!!)

yes in belguim if you have artist status you have to play so many gigs per year there is a very small minuim then you are allowed the basic legal wage depending if you a married or single the married wage is something like 968 euros for a month
i agree insuring musicians for a bad month..........but around this time in germany it did happen
