Hello everybody,
As I have mentioned on another thread, I had the good fortune to catch Ry Cooder in Madrid back in July on his European tour with Nick Lowe. I have been a huge fan for many years but this was the first time I had seen him live so it was a big thrill. Needless to say, he did not disappoint, though it would have been nice to see some of his acoustic work in a live setting.
I was particularly fascinated by the guitars on display. As you can see from the attached links, he gave both Coodercasters a good airing, playing mostly on the sunburst model with the tortoiseshell pickguard, though he played a sublime version of "Teardrops will fall" on the daphne blue one with the Bigsby tremolo. He also played a sunburst telecaster with a MOTS pickguard and a very unusual version of "Vigilante man" in Spanish position on what looked like a National lap steel. He also played a version of "Chinito chinito" on what looked like a Bigsby Merle Travis model, though from where I was sitting it was difficult to tell if this was original or a custom-built replica.
The Coodercasters are well documented but the other guitars are something of an enigma. Can anyone out there shed any light?
All the best
Joe (aka Mairena Red)

Not a National lap but a Rickenbacker bakelite spanish neck from the 30'... Michael had the same one. This sound is THE sound which haunts me for years...

Hi
I've just watched a vid of Ry playing Hobo Blues with John Lee Hooker on a interesting baby sized acoustic. Really nice tone.I'm not sure how to add the link but it was easy to find
Cheers

Hi Joe,
I went to the London show at the Lyceum, it was a great concert.
The bakelite Rickenbacher sounded great on Vigilante Man. It was Bigsby Merle Travis, not a repro!!!

Yep I saw them in New Zealand just before Xmas. A great show. Cooder seemed happiest when he was supporting Lowe. He appears to be a very modest man.

Hello Pascal, Thanks for the info about the lap steel, I would never have guessed it was a Ricky, but then I'm not exactly an expert on vintage lap steels Hello Michael, Thanks for the info on the Bigsby Merle Travis, I knew something about them but did not think that any of the originals had survived.Good to hear that at least one of them is still around and being played as it should be and not mouldering in some collection Anyone have any info on the Telecaster? All the best, Joe (aka Mairena Red)
