I recall a thread some time ago exploring some of the obscure terminology used in lots of old blues recordings.
Anyone looking to receive a great last-minute Christmas present would really enjoy this (available from Amazon, £12.79):
Barrelhouse Words, Stephen Calt, University of Illinois Press, 2009
286 pages and more than 1200 blues idioms explained!

I'm told its in my stocking along with the latest Paul oliver tome. An early gift to myself was Bill Ferris' "Give My Poor Heart Ease" which I can recommend to anyone with an interest in Southern black culture, has a nice cd and dvd included.

I'll see what Santa brings (after I made that deal with him down at the crossroads...) but otherwise the Calt book will be ordered - despite the fact that I deeply disliked his book on Skip James. I'd also add +1 for the Ferris book: top-notch stuff.
Cheerily,
