HI Michael I am thinking about getting a Weissenborn soon. Can you recommend a learning DVD ? If in fact one exists, or as I probably suspect , all I need is a ' How to play a Dobro' type of DVD.
Also looking at guys playing them on You-tube, is that a heavy round bar they use , what' s its name , and where can I get one
Regards

I understand that Anne Summers carry quite a large stock of the bar that you are after, I hear that its best to keep the revs low until you have mastered it.

More seriously, once you have your marital aid, Bob Brozman has 3 dvd's which may interest you - there are 2 on lap style blues in which some of the playing is on his Weissenborn type guitar and also he has a dvd on Hawaiian guitar.
There are also various other lessons by others on Dobro.
Why not check out Stephan Grossman's Guitar workshop and Homespun Tapes web sites. Also, I believe MM himself has a lap style lesson planned.

Ditto re the Brozman Lap style for Blues DVD's. I can't think of much else off hand. There are lots of Dobro DVD's, but unless your into Bluegrass (which if you’re getting a Weissenborn your probably not), I’d avoid them.
Regarding bars - broz-o-phonic (good affordable steel), Tribo tone (great but expensive for a beginner), Diamond Bottlenecks (if your into glass), Scheerhorn/Tipton/Stevens (good if you want Michael to visit you in the middle of the night with a cricket bat:-)
BTW you can download the Brozman stuff direct from Homespuns web site now.
Cheers Ben

I will be making a lap-steel slide instruction DVD in January and hope to have it released by early Spring 2010.
In the meantime, the best lap-steel instruction DVDs (IMO) are by Bob Brozman, Cindy Cashdollar and Doug Cox. I do not believe that one should separate the styles into Hawaiian, Blues, country Dobro etc. While there are unquestionable differences between Jerry Douglas & Sol Hoopii for example, there are also numerous similarities in the fact that both players are playing lap-steel guitar using some basic logical techniques that cannot be avoided. My mission will not be to teach a student how to play in a particular style, but it will lay out the basic information and techniques required to play lap-steel guitar in whatever style the students chooses.

H Michael I reckon your DVD will be coming out at about the time I will need it to get me going. When you listen to this bit of music played on a weissenborn, you have just got to get one and have a go yourself

As far as I know Ed Gerhard hasn't put out a Weissenborn instructional DVD yet, but I have learned a lot by watching his videos on YouTube. I was lucky to catch him performing this tune live at the NAMM Show this past January:

That Weissenborn sounds like it has got 'frets' under the bass strings, and he seems to be using his little finger to 'fret' the bass strings.. (See for example at 1:42 (ish)
Whatever next..??!

Hello Michael, Delighted to hear that you are working on a lap-steel slide instruction DVD. I already have the Bob Brozman, Cindy Cashdollar and Jerry Douglas DVDs but it will be good to have one from the Master Let us know as soon as it's available.. I agree with you that lap-steel techniques cut across different styles of music and you can learn something from everyone. All the best, Joe (aka Mairena Red) PS How about a Michael Messer Dobro or Weissenborn to complement the MM Blues and Lightning models?

Hi Joe, Good to hear from you. I bet it's warmer where you are than here! I didn't know you are learning to play lap steel - great stuff. Which is your favourite of the lap steel DVDs that you have got? Mmmmmm.....an MM Dobro & Weissenborn - all in good time . We are expanding the MM range, which has taken longer than we originally anticipated. In 2010 we will have a few new MM models. It is a slow process; first the designs, then a few different prototypes and then into manufacture. With our workshop being in China and shipping times, language differences etc... It takes time to get everything right. Keep in touch Best wishes, Shine On Michael.

Hello Michael, Weather's been a bit cold recently. We went stright from summer to winter and missed out autumn altogether November temperatures were 15ºC/25ºC min/max which was about 10ªC warmer than the UK (I was in Newmarket on 19 November and really noticed the difference). However, this month the temperature has dropped to 5ºC/15ºC min/max so I've had to get out the thermal underwear ;D Hard to say which DVD is my favourite as it's horses for courses. The Cindy Cashdollar one is great for absolute beginners as it focusses on basic techniques and the Jerry Douglas one is for more advanced players as it looks at more advanced techniques. BB's is somewhere between the two. Definitely looking forward to your's though. Re the MM Dobro and Weissenborn, I live in hope. Also interested to hear what plans you have for new MM models. I contacted Robin recently as I fancied a 14 fret Lightning but was disappointed to learn that the Lightning only comes in a 12 fret version. Any plans for a 14 fret Lightning? All the best, Joe (aka Mairena Red)
