I tried too ;D
The Morton guitars look interesting, a litte more Art Nouveau, rather that Art Deco.

They don't appeal to me, but it's great to gather all these weird & wonderful machines in one thread.
20 years ago Nigel Thonbury (guitar maker) in Ash, Aldershot, made a wood bodied single cone National type guitar for Reading-based musician, Richard Cox Smith. It was a unique looking machine with a wood coverplate. I wonder what happen to that? I'd like to see a picture.

I suppose its difficult to design new instruments when the original is such an icon. I'm still waiting for someone to try and make a tricone flying V

I like new designs, but so far the only ones that have appealed to me are the ones that I feel are sympathetic to the original designs and concept. But that is just my take on it!
I am sure the John Morton's guitars are very well made. I can see that just from looking at the pictures. My comment is not critisism, just an obsevation. I am very supportive of people making beautiful hand built guitars.

It kinda surprises me that cutaways aren't more widely used on resos, & that so many models adhere to that 12 fret design - i know there are arguments re sonic superiority of 12 fretters, but for me, the advantage of access to higher frets (especially using slide, which I'd guess that most reso players are doing) wins out; I think NR's Resorocket looks to be about the best thing out there just now, nice mix of useful modern ideas (cutaway, trussrod) with older-style aesthetics..

I must admit I love the look (and sound) of the Reso Rocket. Also its wooden bodied relation - the RadioTone Bendaway - which is a dream to get to the 12th fret & slightly beyond! However now I'm more into reso's I'll consider a non-cutaway at a future date - finances allowing!

Larry Pogreba's resonator guitars have "pounded" aluminum bodies and use old automobile hubcaps as coverplates -- this one from a 1950s Rambler: Bonnie Raitt and David Lindley own Pogrebas, which are described as having "a complex voice with great overtones and natural reverb." I'll be nice and just describe them as "unusual."

Hi Russ, Thanks for the Pogreba photo. I haven't thought about Pogreba guitars for a while! These pictures were taken in 2000 when we photographed the Notecannons collection. I enjoyed seeing the instrument and having some time to play it. I think the idea of the hub caps is very cool, but the "overtones and great reverb"..... :(mmmmmmmm? ?. Shine On, Michael.

Hi there ! I apologise for getting off topic here but since you were showings pics of new build resos, I wondered if you had any comment to add to my question in the "Notecannons" forum about the side stripe on old National Style "O" 's and new NRP Style "O" ' s ?? I'm dying for an answer !!! Colin McCubbin doesn't seem sure. (Partly a question on the side stripe, partly a question on body depth of old Nationals changing by quarter of an inch (well, at least at the neck end). Thanks. www.soundclick.com/snakehipsodonnell

Hi Snakehips,
I thought Colin had answered your question. Go to the thread and I'll pick up from there...
