I was thinking yesterday, how much does the originality of an instrument effect its desirability, collectability and price?
Often there are instruments that have bits, necks, cones etc. I just wondered what the collecors thought.
(bit like an A level question: Discuss)

I'm a player, not a collector, so I'm happy with any non-original replacement bits that make the thing play/sound better..felt differently when I was (much!) younger, but over the years have become much less 'reverential' about guitars, seeing them as tools to do a job - probably a good thing that not everyone's like me tho, or there'd be very few nice vintage guitars around..I DO think prices of vintage instruments are pretty absurd tho, what with $30-odd dollar Duolians fetching $3000+ - those old-time blues-players would be mighty shocked..

Maybe it's like vintage cars.. some are great runners basically orginal, a bit worn but go well whilst some are so restored and shiny you wouldn't dare taken 'em on the road and of course, finally there are the collectors dreams... intouched, immaculate and 101% original. Every vintage car I have owned has usually gone like whatnot off a shovel and thrown a 100 yard wide oil slick - I like my guitars the same way
