Hi, I really want to get the hang of the style of Robert Johnson, especially the songs in standard tuning. Can anyone recommend an instruction book (with CD) which goes into his style, chord voicings in standard tuning and ideas in depth? I am not really looking at exact transcriptions. More of an analysis of his style, so that I can incorporate (eventually!) into my own playing? There is an instruction book by Woody Mann, "The Guitar of Robert Johnson". Any ideas about it, or perhaps even better alternatives? Thanks, will appreciate your ideas.

I'm pretty sure we had a thread on this recently but can't recall the title. The book by Woody Mann - much as I like the guy personally and love his playing - is not very good. The best I've come across is the one by Scott Ainslie - really accurate and full of little wrinkles that make all the difference. Scott also has a DVD* on Johnson available which is really good: he teaches about seven or eight songs in the various keys and tunings used by Li'l Robert, so it's easy to extrapolate the techniques to other songs - eg once you've got a hold of Kindhearted Woman Blues it's fairly easy to move to RJ's other songs in A standard. There are also two DVDs by Rory Block which are good but a little too idiosyncratic for my taste: the guitar parts, whilst terrific, are MUCH more Rory Block than RJ. But that's just my personal view. There are also numerous versions of RJ's songs on YouTube - far too many, in some cases - but they might give you starting points. The best thing of all, of course, is to listen to Johnson's songs over and over again, guitar in hand... Cheerily, Gerry C. *Edit: Here you go - cattailmusic.com/ForGuitarPlayers/RobertJohnsonVideo.htm

Thanks a lot, Gerry. If there has already been a thread on this, I will be grateful if someone could point it out.

Hi Fibrebundle,
I'll give a second vote for Scott Ainslie's DVD. It is very accessible and, whilst not exact RJ it will give you some good standard tuning RJ songs very quickly and with no over elaborate fuss. I play a few of his arrangements myself as "standards".

Another vote here for Scott Ainslie's DVD. Also, several of his performances of RJ songs are up on YouTube. Here's one:

Hey Guy's,
Thanks for this, just got Scott Ainslie's Robert J DVD. Good stuff, very well done and easy to follow. As always with this stuff its all the little touches that make the difference, and this guy gets them all. Just like the recording.
Al put me onto Scott Ainslie's work recently when we were chatting. Guess all roads lead to the right stuff!
Cheers
