Hi Everybody,
Can anybody give me some idea of the rough dimensions of a "standard" tricone installation?
I am playing around with a cigar box guitar build. Had intended to do something simple to start, and maybe I will, but just wondered what the length, width and depth dimensions would be. I guess the tri-bridge support determines the length and width, and the height of the cones the depth.
regards

Yes, you're right, the size of the whole setup is dependent on the T bridge and the size of the cones. I haven't got a tricone open at the moment so I can't give you the exact dimensions but the coverplate on my Beltona is 12 inches wide and 12 1/2 inches long, so the well inside would be about 1/4 inch less all round. It's always best to get the actual parts you're going to use and measure them before starting to build anything, though, because dimensions can vary.

Hi Mel {Edit - I see Pete has just posted something more informative while In was writing this, even so I'll leave it now it's done] I don't know the dimensions, but there is a body plan for a tricone in the archive on the MIMF site < www.mimf.com/ >, you'd probably be able to get a sense of the dimensions you need from that, by counting along the grid on the plan (but if you're not already a member of MIMF you'll have to register to search the archive, and if you don't already have some form of CAD program or dxf viewer you'll have to get one to open the file - happily there are some really basic programs available for free download, if I remember rightly there is some info on where to get these on the same site...) Hope this helps Dave

Thanks. Chemo has progressed well and there's just one session to go so in about 6 weeks' time I should be feeling better and by about October things should be back to normal, more or less. I just hope my hair grows back OK!

Pete,
Many thanks, just what I needed a ballpark figure to see if it could be viable. Just measured my boards and it may just about fit. Will take your good advice and not make a final decision before getting the parts, if I decide to go that route. All the best!
Dave, thanks also for the link to MIMF, I had not come across this, could be very useful.
Cheers
Mel

Hi Mel I've built a standard soundwell in mine. As others have rightly said, on a tricone the T bridge sets the sound well out. A T-bridge is 6 Inches across the top & 5 1/4 inches Down from the middle of the top. The 6 inch cones aren't quite 6 inches there actually 5 7/8 inches so they don't touch each other across the top. The internal dimensions of the sound well are: The sound well is 1 inch deep from the surface of the guitar. The overall length of the soundwell in the neck to tail direction is 12 inches & it is 11 1/2 inches across the guitar.

Hi Barn,
Many thanks for the extra detail. The depth of the installation makes this quite tempting, as it could fit within the dimensions of the body I was thinking of. I am going to work out the exact dimensions of the body and then make a choice of Tricone, single cone or, to start with, just a acoustic guitar for my first attempt at building.
Anyway, thanks again, very useful information.
regards
Mel
