Hi I built a hybrid Cigar Box Guitar/Banjo thing last year. Here are the pics: viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=205038666&albumId=1850030It's got 5 strings so i can play it like banjo or tenor guitar when i go camping and not worry about an expensive instrument . I couldn't easily find a cigar box that i liked so i made my own box. The whole thing is mainly pine stripwood and a sheet of plywood from B&Q. Bought a fretboard and fretwire, tuners were the old ones off my Tricone. As you can see the neck stick doesn't go all the way through more like an acoustic guitar. A banjo bridge meant setting bridge position was easy peasy. There's a sond clip of me playing slide on the myspace main page, Cigar box slide: www.myspace.com/wodjahAll in all cost me about £40. This year i plan to do a reso model. More fun than TV Cheers Roj

Hi Guys..Please note, The UK Cigar Box Guitar Festival has been rescheduled...its now
SATURDAY 3rd OCTOBER.
This was due to the fact that some people couldn't make the original date, so we put the date back after the summer hols....plenty of time to make some more guitars now!

My new CBG arrived today from Chickenbone John, and I've only just now managed to tear myself away from it to get online. Wonderful guitar! It has kicked off a storm at my work, and with a large group who managed to waylay me in the pub on my way home (I'm easilly led, even with a new guitar in hand). I will try and make the October gathering -- putting the date back wil give me more time to become acquainted with it.

Forgot to boast, while I was smiling about the CBG, that what also arrived in the post today was a beautiful new Diamond slide, courtesy of Ian, which fits my little finger like a glove. Ahh heaven! Off to annoy the neighbours some more ... ;D

Here we go...at last I've finished my first resonator cigar box guitar using a "Continental" uke cone...and I'm really pleased with it...the only downside is it's not for me, it's for a customer. I'm just about to finish up another one too...

Hey Chickenbone,
Great job, if it sounds anything like it looks its a real winner!
I am in the process of attempting one at the moment, my first, but as I am using 3rd year woodworking skills (what you did at school when they would let you use sharp tools) at a range of 44 years who knows what will come out.
A couple of questions if you don't mind. How did you make the cone cover? Why did you choose four strings, rather than 5 or 3? Oh yes and what tuning would you use?
cheers
Mel

My customer wanted a 4 string, so that's what I made...it gives a whole load of options for tuning, regular tenor, mandola, various open tunings for slide etc...the coverplate is just cut using a router and a centre-point base plate (I had to make a base plate that would cut small radii), holes cut with a regular holesaw on a drill press

CBGs - love 'em. That's a mighty fine CBG reso, John. I'm in the process of building a similar beast with a uke cone if I could only stop fiddling with my tele! I like what you done with the cover plate. Is that ally for the bridge and handrest? There's a short clip of my first CBG here... www.myspace.com/domfreestoneThe instrument is complete trash really - the top of the box is not even wood, it's thick cardboard but I think it sounds cool and has that classic CBG sound. The neck is diy pine with nails for frets! Will note the UK CBG festival date in my diary. Cheers, Dom

Yes, it's an offcut of aluminium for the handstrap and tailpiece. The coverplate was made like that out of necessity, it was the simplest way of doing it.

Hi All, Herewith the progress on my cigar box guitar. The body and bits are almost done. The finger board on the snap is the practice one, the final one will be a nice piece of ebony I have. Its going to get the tuners from my blues, which now has stewmac ones, and can take up to six strings, but will probably have less. I decided to make this a sort of test bed to try out some things. So in addition to its P90 it will also have dual piezo bugs on the top. The top is 4mm Cigar box cedar which I have routed out to about 2mm in the hope of getting a bit more acoustic performance. The design theme is the "Gambler" hence the card symbol sound holes and some other bits I have in mind. Just got to finish some bits then it can go together and I can move on to the fingerboard shaping and fretting. Will let you know how it goes regards Mel

if it sounds anything like it looks its a real winner!/quote] It's mine ;D ;D And it does sound as good as it looks! I've got a 3-string from Chickenbone John and it's a terrific little CBG, but this one is a stunner! I even took the day off work today just to play it more Thanks John!

Bimey Mel...that's pretty ambitious for a first build. Are those soundhole rosettes fretted out? They look very delicate...wooden pickup cover as well?
