Ive also been thinking about one of these ebony capped bridges for my for my National. Could anyone tell me if it simply changes the sound or improves it ?and if so in what way ? is it worth having a boxwood one made bearing in mind this is what the originals where ? I know that National now use maple but assumed this was a cost exercise ? Many Thanks Mark, I had an email from Pete Woodman about this, see below. Basically the ebony cap on a bridge gives it a little more "punch" than the straight maple. Because it's a bit harder and more brittle its a more trebly kind of sound. If you play electric guitar it's a bit like turning up the "Presence" knob - i.e. it's a good thing or a bad thing depending on what kind of sound you're looking for. I would say if you want harsher and bluesier then use an ebony cap, if you want to bring out the warmer tones a Tricone has then use straight maple. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas!

In general, I find boxwood tends towards the warmer end of the scale. I can't really see that going from boxwood to maple would save more than a few dollars, an insignificant amount compared to the cost of the guitar. Working it costs the same - it's no more difficult than maple. It doesn't take much of either of them to make a bridge.
I guess they save because they probably have a lot of maple offcuts lying around the factory so they don't need to buy more wood in.

Michael, Early on in the discussion on upgrading Vintage AMG3 bridge and nut you mentioned that the biggest improvements on many resonators were down to correct set-up. Can you give any recommendations for luthiers who really do know how to set-up resonators?? I have just purchased an AMG3 and am waiting for it to arrive. I also have a Dobro Model 36 which could do with a neck re-set so I really do need to know someone who can work on these guitars and that knows what to do and what not to do. Many thanks Steve J.
