My son Mike is currently in Madrid for a week playing blues with a band at various venues including Cafe Popul'Art right in the heart of Madrid. Check their web site www.populart.es/ it might give you a lead in to other things.

On Stefan Grossman's forum, aka The Woodshed, there is a member whose handle is 'steve in madrid'; his name is Steve and he, um, lives in Madrid! And has done for quite a few years, I believe. It may well be worth your while to contact him with a PM. He has a band called 'Los Cold Hearts' who have a MySpace page: if you go to mine ( www.myspace.com/gerrycooper ) and search my 'friends' under L you should find them. I've not met Steve but we have corresponded and he seems like a nice guy: mention my name if you wish. Cheerily, Gerry C

Hi Ged
I'm just a beginner myself, so have no great stock of tips to pass your way - others might have, and you'll probably find some helpful info if you search around in the other threads here - but I would say have a think about getting a dvd that'll show you some moves. Lots of folk hereabouts rate 'An Introduction to Blues Slide Guitar' by Michael Messer very highly, and I'd have to agree with them. I found it hugely helpful, cos it helped me to identify some of the mistakes I was making as well showing me how to begin playing licks that were recognisable to me as blues licks, which helped with the confidence no end. There's a thread about this dvd on the forum (in 'Main Street' under the heading 'Teaching DVD') that'll give you more of an idea of what is on it and what other people thought of it.
Cheers
Dave

Dave,
Thanks for the response. I do intend to get Michael's dvd which I am sure will be helpful. It's great fun learning anyway. I joined this forum today and am finding my way around there's a lot to do getting this resonator business sorted.
regards,
Ged.

Quote: there's a lot to do getting this resonator business sorted.Man, you have no idea...!! ;D As well as MM's DVD - is top-notch - I'd recommend above all what I recommmend to my students: LISTEN to as many slide players as you can. One of the great things this forum has done is opened my ears to a huge range of slide players. Previously I pretty much only listened to blues guys but now I listen to Hawaiian, Western swing, bluegrass, Indian slide... Here are a dozen names of guys from various genres I - and others - consider great slide players: Blind Willie Johnson. Martin Simpson. Mohan Vishna Bhatt. Ry Cooder. Robert Johnson. Casey Bill Weldon. Bashful Brother Oswald. Sol Hoopi. Steve Phillips. Bob Brozman. Tampa Red. Son House. Oh and there's some young upstart called Michael Messer who's not bad! Cheerily, Gerry C PS Vestapol videos ( www.guitarvideos.com ) have a series of DVDs on slide guitar: I think it's called something like Masters of Slide Guitar (2 vols, I think.) They also have several DVDs with titles like Legends of Bottleneck Blues Guitar which round up the usual suspects.

Real name:- Lou Glandfield, a.k.a Louie the Crow. (www.louglandfield.com) I'm in North Chailey, near Lewes, East Sussex and will be busking - with an old Gibson SG - at the Cliffe, Lewes most Saturdays form March on, weather permitting... When not on the street, I play a Gold Tone PBS De Luxe cutaway and a National Polychrome Tricone as well as a prototype Guitarras Cuervo flat top which I've just built as a student with esteemed Lewes luthier Richard Osborne. Lewes is a guitar town. Apart from the festival - which is temporararily on hold - we've got Nick Benjamin and Pablo Requena in the same building... I use Diamond slides because I love them to bits (www.diamondbottlenecks). See also their review in this month's acoustic magazine.

Hi JDS, I am just down the road from you in sunny Seville. Obviously flamenco is king here, but there is also a lively blues scene with several good blues guitarists playing live on a regular basis, most notably Lolo Ortega (see . Madrid also has a lively blues scene with a number of good venues including the aforementioned Café Jazz Populart, El Junco, Caravan, La Coquette Blues Bar and Beethoven's Blues Bar (presumably so named because you come out deaf!). I suggest you google "Blues in Madrid" for more details. You should also check out www.tabernablues.com for info on blues gigs and festivals all over Spain. Drop me a PM with your contact details and I will get in touch next time I come up to Madrid (I visit fairly regularly). Needless to say, if you ever make it down here, the milky bars are on me ;D All the best, Joe (aka Mairena Red)

Too lazy to look in an atlas or Streetmpap, are you anywhere near Ratlinghope? Supposed to be open mics there (3 Horseshoes I think).

What open mics have you got out that way? I'm trying to find places I can play that have a campsite near or even attached, so I can leave She Who Wishes To Be Obeyed in the camper while I display my gross inadequacies to the world.
