Hi all, Just picked up a 2nd hand MM Blues 12 (MMB 269 12) that was shipped by courier. No obvious damage to the packaging. On arrival there was something rattling around in the body: looks like a wooden mushroom! see pics. I’m assuming this is some kind of internal brace/support that has come loose. Also, should the biscuit be flush with the body surface? It’s currently sitting about 1cm below the level of the cone cover plate. See pics. Still plays OK although not sure the resonator is as loud as would be expected. Any advice on how to proceed? I’d prefer to repair If possible rather than return to seller provided it’s a straightforward fix. Thanks, Sean

Hi Sean,
Welcome to our forum and to the wonderful world of resonator guitars.
It is a pit-prop, also known as a mushroom post.
It is not difficult to fix back into position, and it will improve the sound of your guitar.
What I need to establish is which mushroom post it is, so I would like to see some photos of the inside.
1 - Remove all the strings
2 - Remove the 9 coverplate screws
3 - Slide the coverplate out towards the neck, it comes off easily. (Do NOT remove the tailpiece)
4 - Using a felt tip marker pen, make a couple of marks on the cone and on the side of the soundwell so you can put the cone back in exactly the same position as it has been in for the past 11 years.
5 - Put the cone on a flat surface out of the way of danger!
6 - See if you can see from marks on the inside back of the guitar where the mushroom has come from. It will be under the neck stick that runs through the body, with under the fretboard, or towards the back of the guitar. Post some photos just so I am sure of what I am expelling to you, and we can then go into the fitting of the mushroom post.

Hi Michael, Thanks for getting back to me, it’s much appreciated. I’ve dismantled the assembly as instructed. The cone is marked and hidden somewhere safe from being squashed. It looks like the mushroom post came from the neck end of the wooden brace. There’s a spot on the body that feels like there's some roughness and glue residue. Also, there are a few full thickness dings on the edges of the guitar that go all the way through to the underlying steel. Do I need anything special to touch these up or will any paint designed to protect metal work ok? I’m not bothered about cosmetics: I just want to prevent any rot from taking hold! Pics attached. Thanks, Sean

It just needs glueing back into its position.
I bit of glue on the top of the post and a bit on the underside of the mushroom, and push it into position. It wants to be tight enough to stay there if there was no glue, but not enough to deform the back of the guitar. And that's it....job done. Put it all back together and enjoy your new guitar!

That’s great news! Thank you, Michael. I’ll get glueing, get her back together and get playing! All the best, Sean
