My wife's uncle just dropped off a 2016 Made in China Epiphone Casino in trade for an acoustic I am building him. On the weekend I added the following: Bone nut Gotoh tuners Gotoh bridge Nylon saddles Bigsby b3 Black pickguard Strung it to open A with 11s but may switch to my preferred flatwound 12s Now it has a Mississippi Fred McDowell vibe to it.

Very handsome! On impulse, I traded my dinky Epiphone Casino Coupe in a few weeks ago for a second hand Godin 5th Avenue archtop. It has a single P90 at the neck. I have that strung up with 11's and tuned to open G.
Actually, while I am here, I wondered - are archtops like this also able to stand re-tuning and putting different gauge strings on in the same way that resonators are ? I wouldn't mind putting 12's on it and tuning to open D for a while, but don't fancy taking it back to the shop where I got it from to have it set up again.

Hi David, Yours and Michael's guitars would be fine with 13-56 or maybe even 15-56 in open G & D tunings. Guitar manufacturers spread the fear of heavier gauge strings to protect themselves. That's great - thanks very much for getting back to me Michael. I think the guitar seller I know may be a little over sensitive regarding how often guitars need setting up - and why. He's a really helpful person, having said that - and his forte is more heavy rock to be fair.

You won't believe this Michael, but I don't actually have a mobile phone/camera, so unfortunately, I can't put a photo on here. My Godin is a 5th Avenue Kingpin, with the single neck pickup. It's made with Canadian wood, apparently, and has a beautiful "Cognac Burst" finish. Apart from it's looks, it appealed to me because it does have a distinctive voice acoustically, and is, of course much, much quieter than resonators. Very handy for when my neighbour is at home!
