This is a brilliant deal on a beautiful instrument. Nothing wrong with it, just needs a bit of TLC. Oh and it is a 1928 instrument, not 1930. It is a very early one. It appears to have its original non-spirals cone. In fact, apart from the strap button that looks like a wart, everything is spot on. This is not a project, it's a bargain. Someone buy it.....PLEASE!!!! Shine On Michael

Hi there !
That doesn't look like a 9.5" cone in there ? Looks a good bit smaller than the coverplate diameter ?

Looks to be a good price, however they often need major neck surgery.....

Hi there ! That doesn't look like a 9.5" cone in there ? Looks a good bit smaller than the coverplate diameter ? The coverplate and the cone are smaller than standard coverplates and cones. This is quite a bit earlier than most, but it was the leftovers from mandolins that in the 50s they used to make 1133s and 1033s. That is why they have 8" cones and coverplates. They appeared on a few other models too. This is a beautiful instrument and well worth the asking price. Shine On Michael

As Michael says, this is a VERY early single cone silver mandolin from early 1928. The reason for the high coverplate with a large ‘rim’ is because they used the same dies that the previous triplate mandolins needed to seat the t bar. The triplates seem to have stopped around 150. We have 155 as a new single cone style 3, 156 is a Style 2 and 166 as a style 1 so , at the moment 160 stands as only the second single Style 2 we know of.

As I have said earlier in this thread….
Somebody on the forum please buy this mandolin!
I am currently budgeted out on instruments as I have a new guitar on order, but if I wasn’t I would not hesitate about buying this.

Hi there !
Apart from having never played mandolin, and not really loving the sound of mandolin, I still have hankerings for vintage Nationals. However, I've been there before, with vintage National squarenecks - and then sold them on as they were not suited to me either. Tempting though ! Plus, in the UK, who is available these days, to work on vintage Nationals, that knows what they are doing ?
However, there are at least 4 or 5 other guitars available that I'm doing my absolute best to try & forget about. So, I'll not be going for this mandolin. Plus, I'm expecting to pay for something soon'ish anyway, Michael ....... !
Nice mandolin anyway. Perfect for someone.

When I imported my first guitar from the USA in the 1980's, my other half answered the door to the delivery man and announced "There's a man here wants £400". This was my first experience of import duty.

This was my first experience of import duty. Davey, you can check, but it should be around £200 in import duties. I reckon the seller would accept an offer. Shine On Michael

Make sure you get the seller to state the year of manufacture of the mandolin on the shipping documents. This ensures you get the correct/lowest possible duty/vat fee.
Once items are 100yrs old or older, there is no vat, or something ! Things should start getting more attractive for buying & shipping vintage Nationals, from about 3yrs time & there-after.
