I came across this guitar on eBay a few days ago and couldn't make sense of the pictures. Had the guitar been sawn with a chain saw? Why were the edges on the end so serated?
And here's it being played.
No connection, but what an interesting guitar.

John Alderson is a fine woodworker who made the replacement neck for my Golden Fiddle edge (Avatar). There a few Hollowneck Dobros being made in Germany (Manzantia??) 20 years or so ago, maybe thats the Genesis of the idea but the headstock is different and the body shape is like the experimental Dobro that was in the Dorera exhibition prior to being auctioned off.
Interesting stuff.

Morning all!
This instrument was one of three made by John Alderson in Leicestershire. It was originally based on a design drawn up by Tom Doughty who, due to limited movement in his hands and fingers, needed the tuners nearer to his right hand ~ hence the headless appearance.
Unfortunately Tom never really bonded with it, so as far as we know there's this one, another one is owned by a great friend known to everyone here oop in Yorkshire, and the third is in Germany......and there'll never be any more made.
Slide On!

It doesn’t look weird to me, and knowing Tom ,I can see why he might have wanted something like this. The big problem with this design is placing the tuning buttons. They would have to be spread out for Tom, but this does make for a rather odd string run. A very difficult problem to overcome .
I will put the little grey cell in gear and have a think. My solution will definitely not be as neat , John’s, for all it’s ‘weirdness’ it does look great.
Does anyone else have any ideas on a headless resonator and how to have the tuning buttons in a more ergonomic place?
This may jump to the Workbench section if I come up with an idea. Pete

Just had a chat with Tom. Though interested in my idea he is happy with his guitars at the moment ( by using a string winder on reverse slotted headstock tuners he no longer needs a different setup.
I have already designed a ‘quick tune’ device to go behind the bridge, may get it 3D printed and see if it works
Pete
PS : if you have never heard Tom , give him a listen. He has an unusual style and a great sound. A very talented player. I think a new CD ( or rather recording, not sure it’s on CD) is out now/soon? Always a joy to hear.

I have the original prototype one, very much the same as the one Martyn has (in the video) but mine has a "sound port" in the neck and a few other small variations. It's a really nice instrument and sounds great.
