This has been an interesting thread but the whole thing rests upon what a person's ears perceive and what sound they prefer, whether something is an improvement is an individual decision. I'm in MM's camp with regard to the sounds produced by the tricone, I love the sweet tone and massive sustain. Single cones, being more "budget" items are far more variable in sound, some I like, others I don't. Personally, being left handed, I went to Mike Lewis for a tricone and haven't had the finances to add a vintage instrument.

Exactly, a lot of objective information was posted here, but it all comes down to the subjective perception of tone. I think it's good that we can buy guitars which are faithful replicas or guitars loosely inspired by old Nationals and built in unorthodox way. Only drawback is that there are no shops where you could play many resonator guitars side by side
