the song began as a recorded rough draft outline Jimi made in his NYC apartment in March of 1968. then Mitch Mitchell and and Chris Wood [flute player for band "Traffic"] recorded the first studio tracks by March 13th. the next phase of overdubs were recorded on April 22nd. the final mix-down was completed and recorded on June 10th.
NOT intended to be a trivia overdose, but laying the groundwork for my theory. by then Bryan James "Chas" Chandler [the original bass player for "The Animals"] was no longer managing or producing for the band. have found no reason given anywhere for that, but he was one of the few friends Hendrix had who stood by him in the difficult period just before his death. he had urged him to move to the UK from NYC, where he'd get to meet many stars that were Chas's personal friends. that payed off when Keith Richards gave Jimi his very first [trademark guit later on] Fender Stratocaster guitar. he was the one who brought in Mitchell for drums and Redding for bass when the Experience band was formed. even funded their first record release, "Hey Joe" out of his own pocket when the big name record labels refused to.
sadly, he was also the one who discovered Jimi was dead. doubt he would say anything bad about a dear friend afterward.
Noel Redding had left the band by then. [that's why Jimi played the bass on this song] once read an interview with him where he mentioned being tired of marathon recording sessions at all hours of the night. also Jimi's perfectionist approach of introducing little tweaks that required an entire re-make of the song up to that point. [IIRC] said that "Gypsy Eyes" went on until near dawn for the final recorded song, 126 takes later.
making a short story very long, my guesstimate is that in the 4+ months of lyrics below being first written down to final recording some word changes could have happened. same shown below were said to be authentic by his daughter Janie Hendrix. no handwriting expert here, but i did know a guy once who's mother lived on the same street with one.
[it looks like his writing style to me compared to other examples. see full lyrics below song video]
note that this only goes up to [Verse 3] below. as such, the original words might have been altered in recordings made afterward when the last part was added?

what ever may get agreed to or not accepted, a great science/fiction story plot. in the same vein as Crosby, Stills and Nash song, "Wooden Ships". or Steely Dan's "King Of The World". unpleasant subject matter many avoid due to a "gloom and doom" prophetic nature. it is not an insight, just a projection of possible outcomes. would point out that JUST ONE GOOD MAN could thwart even the best laid plans to destroy the earth.
the world will subsequently honor them by trying to remove their names from all public records. just in order to quash any future chances of independent thinking among the sheeple. for instance how many people know that Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov saved the entire planet in 1962?
a little set-up here. due to no auto emission standards, in the late 1960's you had to be within a mile or so to see the 50 foot tall letters of the HOLLYWOOD sign near the top of Mount Lee. clean air was on everyone's mind back then in the Los Angeles Basin. Hendrix had been there numerous times before.
[Verse 1]
Hooray, I awake from yesterday
Alive, but the war is here to stay
So my love, Catherina and me
Decide to take our last walk through the noise to the sea
Not to die, but to be reborn
Away from lands so battered and torn
Forever
Forever
[why repeat this line twice when "Forever was their main complaint" is in the bridge also? i listened to this song many, many times back in 1971. with all of the delay, deciphering the words is like trying to determine which reflection is directly in front of you in a hall of mirrors. my ears hear, "For air. For air".]
[Verse 2]
Oh, say can you see, it's really such a mess
Every inch of Earth is a fighting nest
Giant pencil and lipstick tube-shaped things [itself hears, "lipstick-tube shaped brains".]
Continue to rain and cause screaming pain
And the Arctic stains from silver blue to bloody red
As our feet find the sand and the sea
Is straight ahead
Straight up ahead
[Bridge]
Well, it's too bad, that our friends can't be with us today
Well, it's too bad
"The machine that we built would never save us"
That's what they say
That's why they ain't coming with us today
And they also said
"It's impossible for man to live and breathe underwater"
Forever was their main complaint, yeah
And they also threw this in my face, they said
"Anyway, you know good and well
It would be beyond the will of God
And the grace of the King"
Grace of the King, yeah, yeah
[Verse 3]
So my darling and I make love in the sand
To salute the last moment ever on dry land
Our machine has done its work, played its part well
Without a scratch on our bodies and we bid it farewell
Starfish and giant foams greet us with a smile
Before our heads go under, we take a last look at the killing noise
Of the out-of-style
The out-of-style, out-of-style, ooh-ooh-ooh
[Instrumental Break]
[Verse 4]
So down and down and down and down
And down and down we go
Hurry, my darling, we mustn't be late
For the show
Neptune champion games to an aqua
World is so very dear
"Right this way," smiles a mermaid
I can hear Atlantis full of cheer
[Refrain]
Atlantis full of cheer
I can hear Atlantis full of cheer
just NIT-PICKING, your mileage may vary
