was listening to "past the point of rescue" yesterday, an excellent album.
upon hearing long day comin' again 30+ years downstream from CD release, was struck by what a gut wrenching story it still is to listen to.
a father hopelessly trying to explain things he doesn't understand to his young child who is even less equipped to deal with the reality.

Hal Ketchum was a fine songwriter and he made some really good records. As far as I am aware, he was not really known over here. I think the only exposure he got was on country music radio shows. He may have been more well known in Ireland because of his connection with Mary Black's music, and because country is more mainstream over there (Of course Hal's music is not country, but that's where it sat in the UK and European marketplace. Everything has to have it's Pigeon-hole/compartmentalized). I knew of him because he grew out of the Austin, Texas, music scene and friends told me about him, and from that background we can hear how influenced he was by Lyle Lovett.
It's a shame when that happens and an artist so well known in the US doesn't get known here, and the other way around. For various reasons, sometimes a taste thing and sometimes for business or personal reasons, their sound just doesn't travel.
It's a good thread because many on this side of the pond will not have heard his songs.

Hal Ketchum did make some great records. Small Town Saturday Night borrowed well from Steve Earle's Guitar Town and possibly Dwight Yoakum's Guitars Cadillacs... Both were big and influential records.
That's okay though because we all get it from somewhere.

"That's okay though because we all get it from somewhere."
even if we can't bring ourselves to admit to it, the chances of a composing a new song that isn't at least a slight form of plagiarism from other themes and/or tunes aren't very good. unintentional or knowingly done.
perhaps the same thoughts stated in different ways? Bruce Springsteen--Born To Run. Simon and Garfunkel--My Little Town.
a more recent in depth oblique projection. even admitting they enjoy better life circumstance than their ancestors, the need among stressed out youth is felt to do -something- crazy and radical, just to show they are not pleased at all with how bad things are getting today. Linkin Park--Rebellion.
