Hi everyone,
I'm trying to date my old archtop from the 40's. It's a recording king model sold through the montgomery ward catalogues and made by Gretsch. Does anyone have a copy of the guitar adverts from '42 onwards? They are hard to find online!
Cheers,

There are a few books with bits of such catalogs reprinted in them. A photo of your guitar might be good. Someone might have done the research already or recall an article. Good luck Pete

Thanks both! Here are some pictures - as far as I can work out it was made by Gretsch in the 40's after Gibson stopped supplying bodies to Montgomery Ward. It's branded Bacon as Gretsch took over the Banjo company in 1940 and started producing catalogue guitars under its name. I'm not sure how many were made or what they sold for in the catalogue - I don't think there's many around but it would be good to find the original advert if possible!

Sorry, can't help with catalogue but can give you a tip of the hat and say, "beautiful guitar!" Looks to be in great shape too!

Try the '42 catalog if you can find it. That contained the Recording King banjo, at least.
Interestingly, the Bacon Recording King models are not related to Montgomery Ward's Recording King brand. They were sold by other retailers as well.
