My son-in -law has just got a ( cheap) 3D printer. Naturally the first thing he wanted to print is a guitar.
Has anyone on the forum any experience in this field?

When I designed the MM Fiddle Edge I had 3D prints made of the coverplate and the tailpiece. It is a very expensive process and takes time to do it correctly. If my memory is correct I paid around £800 for the coverplate job. These scans were done on large professional machines and adjustments were done before the prints were made. Shine On Michael

Just a Tele Style bit of the body so far. Is in 2 parts that dovetail together The plan is to put a neck on in, string it up and see if there is any distortion after strings have been on a few weeks. (There is a steel rod that is a snug fit in a channel ‘printed’ into it so I don’t think it’s going to move far) A Glenwood shape uke is next , though there is a load of computer stuff to do first

Interesting Pete. What is the body you've printed made of? Is it the finished article or a template to work from? You've come a long way from cricket bats and kitchen sinks Pete! 😊👍🎸👏

On this test piece this is more or less the finished article. ( it could have a coat of filler and some spray paint later on) The surface is a bit rough but future work will be better. The material is a plastic filament, there are various grades, some with wood fibre, some with carbon fibre . Pete

It grows.... . I was a bit concerned about the creation of more plastic in a world already full of plastic but the material used is in fact PLA ( polylactic acid) which is made from corn starch and can be composted! Pete

Well it’s in one piece...... It’s a bit neck heavy when using a strap but sounds like a ‘normal ‘ electric guitar. Will take it to a jam on Sunday and see how it performs under pressure! You may notice a Fender logo I got off eBay, the trouble with buying stuff on line is that they don’t always put the size, but it is a genuine Fender ( logo) Maybe I will make the headstock larger? Pete, It looks great. You could balance it up by adding some weight to the body in the cavities, which would also help its resonance.

Yes, we may fill a few with epoxy, or just one with a block of metal. Pete
The neck is a heavy one too, I will try to find a mahogany or similar. The machine heads are an assortment of cast bodied ones and a set of traditional Kluson style olds would also help ( the logo is plastic,so weighs only a few grams)

Hi Pete, looking good! I think the Fender logo is from an amp, you can get transfers on ebay that would fit. Or are you teasing 🤔 🙂🤣

Or are you teasing 🤔 🙂🤣 Yes you might be right, I wondered what guitar it could have come from!😉 Pete I have put water slide transfers on guitars, though I don’t like the idea of putting branded logos on a copy . The Fender logo just tucks under the strings, I don’t think it will fool anyone I did one put a Fender logo on a non-Fender but was careful to put COPYCASTER under it
