Just added a MM 36 to the arsenal.....wanted to say the best reso have ever played.....bought it at 12th Fret here in Toronto (and have played a few)....had a MM Blues 28 a few years back and ended up selling it (I know I'm an idiot lol....seriously only reason sold was a bad hand injury that wasn't sure would ever recover from enough to play again....but now am good to go....and playing slide is easier than shredding lol)....I love the 14 fret over the 12 fret that the 36 brings....even seems easier to play....had considered & tried other options but none come close....for a 1/4 of the price it has the sound and tone equal to a National....no make that equal to any quality reso....it truly has its own sound/tone....and with the quality and sound my gigging guitar for acoustic blues....the build quality is exceptional....hardly what I would call 'budget-priced'.....my hats off to you Michael Messer....

I am thinking of modding with a Rowe DeArmond Harmony Mustache Gold Foil 1966 Chrome Neck Pickup and McIntyre BRF-50- Biscuit Resonator Guitar Pickup....similar to setup that Colin Linden uses

Hello Nishplayer,
Welcome to our forum and thank you for such kind words about your new guitar. I am pleased and proud to hear that you are so happy with the guitar. Me too, very happy with them.
I do however, have reservations about the McIntyre BRF-50, which might sound unfair as I have never used or seen one, but I have experienced a similar type of pickup. First of all, no matter what it is or how light it is, something stuck to the resonator cone will affect the acoustic tone of the guitar. It will sound fine plugged in, but acoustically it will dampen the sound and kill certain frequencies, especially the highs. Even a lightweight sticking plaster stuck on the cone would have this affect. So while Colin Linden might be using one on his guitar, it may not sound so good acoustically. Many years ago I used to do this with pickups that were made for me. They were copies of the C-Ducer piezo strip, but smaller and lighter. I used to think they were the dog's bollox and had them on three of my vintage National guitars, a Style O, a round neck tricone and a square neck tricone, and I gigged everywhere with them, until one day the pickup strip fell off the cone in my Style O and I couldn't believe how good it sounded without the strip. I had got used to the sound with them on the guitars, but had not realised what they were doing. Anything touching the surface of the cone with dampen the sound and kill certain frequencies.
The other pickup, the GoldFoil will sound superb.
Thank you for trusting in my name and becoming the owner of an MM Blues '36. I do hope you are not offended by my comments about the pickup because I am just trying to be helpful and offer my experience with such things. The saddest thing of all is that Highlander went out of business and my advice is to hunt for a used Highlander iP-1X and get that fitted. Nothing else can touch Highlander pickups for resonator guitars. Oh and plug into a Fishman Platinum Pro EQ/DI. Nothing, apart from a microphone, can touch the Highlander going through the Fishman unit.

Michael advice much appreciated....rethinking based on your advice and just doing magnetic pickup in neck and using mic for acoustic resonator when recording....then can mix both guitar amp sound and acoustic resonator recorded through mic....and when playing acoustically still have full undampened sound....similar to this approach by Justin Johnson:

Justin Johnson's setup all looks a bit complicated to me, and doesn't appear to be doing much for his sound. A great pickup, good EQ and maybe a touch of compression, will do the same job. Microphone - a Shure SM57 is an industry standard and is an amazing all-round tool for recording and performing live. And if you are recording at home on your computer, you need a good clean sounding interface.
Sadly, I doubt if I will ever have the MM pickups again. The maker is based in the EU and when the UK Brexited it created so much bureaucracy that he decided to stop supplying anyone in the UK.

I decided on the Krivo Resonator humbucker pickup in silver....a new 2023 model....Krivo Pickups makes the world's most popular humbucking pickups for resonators, and custom build National's Slimline pickups and Republic Resophonic pickups and you can also buy direct from them (which what I did through Reverb, getting a great deal on one by making a reasonable offer that was accepted. These amazing pickups are only 6mm thick and install and remove in seconds. Designed for all acoustic strings including phosphor bronze, Monel, and coated such as Elixir. Newest 2023 model is available in Nickel Silver, Black, and Natural wood finishes. I figure I can use the one as need on the Blues 36 as well as Lightning (and even eventual Fiddle Edge)....this way I don't have to mak or cut into or drill anywhere on my MM guitars (leaving them as they were bought). Will update on how this pickup sounds.
