There are some clearer images of him playing the Tele but none give a good shot of the pickup (that I have found). One makes the pick look as if it a pair of lipstick pickups side by side, could that be it ? Pete
There are some videos of him him talking about the guitar ( he found the body in a dumpster at the Fender factory) and he talks about Skunk-o-Matic pickups, but haven’t found a proper description. There are a few things on the Telecaster Forum that might lead to it but my hand is getting tiered from typing! Pete

Sounds like you've done enough research for one day Pete, you can pickup again tomorrow 👍 😉

Could it be “skunk-o-sonic”? Not seen a lot of info on these, but there’s an interview in which he mentions having skunk-o-sonics on his Tele, and another in which he explains that he winds his skunk-o-sonics on his mother’s old sewing machine, with a gauge of wire he likes and fairly standard magnets…

Skunk-o-Sonic sounds better. Somewhere there will be an interview will Mr Baxter explaining all this in great detail. Pete

Looks like he loved to tinker with his guitars. I think he could have played almost anything and got a good sound out of it. Then there is the question of amp and settings, compression etc.
Pete
There’s at interview on Guitarworld about Tele pickups but I can’t seem to open it on my device. May get a younger member of the family to open it later, looks like it may have some answers
