Hi folks, Newby here, I’m Maurie- I’ll probably just hang and observe and try to learn for a bit, but may feel the need to make some misguided comment or ask an inane Q, so I thought I should say G’day first. I started gigging in the early 70’s, Family/Mortgage ect made it part time from the mid 80’s. That was as a Singer/Guitarist, Frontman/Harmony. Started playing bass in the late 90’s up to recently when I decided to keep an old promise we made ourselves back in the early days - that we could concentrate on blues when we got older - Haha - back then we thought that would be around’40 : ) Knew I should have dived in ages ago- now I have I kinda want to bathe in all of it - so …….. I’ll try to observe and absorb for a while, but may enthusiastically say something stupid. I’d also like to say thank you to Michael and those who run it for this wonderful resource.

Always good to have a new member. New ways of looking at things and asking what they may think are silly questions often leads to fresh ideas and gets experienced players thinking about how they do things.
There are all sorts of people on the forum, some ( like Michael M ) have been playing for years, some just starting out. Sounds like you will fit in fine. Pete
The forum is very interested in resonator guitars ( I have several) but don’t feel you have to get one to join in the fun! ( Hope I haven’t just lost Michael M a sale)

Welcome! For blues you need to go total immersion- listen to as many different artists, especially the originators of the music, as you can. What goes in can come out. Otherwise it will be a mechanical exercise and sound like that. Good Luck!

Re: total immersion in the blues.
My own experience was a little different to ‘total immersion ‘. I borrowed a couple of LPs from a friend ,John Mayall’s Crusade and Muddy Waters first recordings. I was certainly aware of the Blues at the time, but listened mainly to mainstream pop/rock ( Beatles,Stones , Kinks Who etc) The Muddy Waters seemed old fashioned and crude , Crusade ( lots of covers of Blues classics) got me hooked on British Blues , and then I quickly started listening to the American originals. From there to the pre-war Country Blues and back to Muddy Waters who now sounded wonderful. Pete

Thankyou for the welcome - err already had to comment on something so you can see how good that went : ) Total emersion is all I got, when I started bass I stopped playing guitar - had to, so I could get used to the dynamics of the strings and actually play the note and not just hit the string. At the moment I’m struggling to play and learn slide on guitars set for normal playing - and that’s fine for right now as I’m also trying for as light a touch as I can muster, really struggle with Open D but G is okay and straight tuning works. I realise though that I’m pretty much going through the motions until I get a Resonator - it’s the search for that witch led me here : ) An MM is the best option I’ve found so far. Wondering what I can get for my Jazz5 Dlxe ; )

We could play all night and it was Greenie and Mayall mixed up with Little Feat and others we trying to learn from - of course we didn’t have a clue but that’s where we started. If you cast your mind back, it was pretty eclectic, lots of different music around and all popular. That changed a bit in Australia when that driving PubRock developed and pretty much took over. Sure a lot was electric blues based and the occasional straight blues went down but it was trying to transmute into its own sort of thing. Hehe It was about when that changed that we promised ourselves we would get back to real stuff when we were to old to be angry young men anymore. Cheers Maurie.

Hiya MaurieR from Australia I was wondering if there were some Antipodian presence here - I’m down on the Mornington Peninsula, Sth. of Mudburne, where are you? Are there more? Cheers Maurie
