Hello All,
Wondered if anyone has seen a 14 fret Duolian with a wild sunburst flame maple neck; Rosewood board. Serial # dates it to 1935. Looks like a Triolian neck minus the binding, has the upgraded Triolian tuners. Has the shield decal for a Duolian. The guitar is coming this week and appears to be all original. Pictures added when it is here. Best, Malcolm

Hi there ! Are you sure it has the original finish ? This is how the sunburst finish looks on my two 14-fret Duolians. The have a fairly subdued sunburst to them : NB. That's not a crack in the headstock, on the headstock on the right - it is in fact a neck with the "sandwich layer" between the main neck wood and the fretboard - and the line you see is where the join between the layers is visible. Humm never seen such a beast! Its entirely possible but so far from the many I've seen the rarest 14 fret Duolians are the one piece mahogany necked 34's with the Duolian stamp. With pictures we will know more,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hey Guys, Thank you for the replies.
Richard: The finish matches the lighter colored headstock and it has the sandwich seam line on the headstock. It shows up lighter on the flame maple than on Basswood or Mahogany. It's way out there. I will get pics as soon as it is in my greedy hands!

Richard, What wood is used on your two Duolian fingerboards? It looks like the same wood used on this maple necked thing. My guess was Brazilian.

Hi again !
I'm not great at identifying woods BUT I'm almost positive neither have mahogany necks (you usually get the grain-filler tiny dots on the surface of the wood).
I'm expecting both of mine have Basswood necks. On the headstock pics, the 1935 Duolian on the right has a Cocobolo replacement fretboard. The original fretboard was just like the 1934 Duolian on the left, except the 1935 Duolian fretboard was a lighter colour, like the headstock. Both fretboards have (or had) quite an open-grain feel to the playing surface. I'm not thinking Brazilian rosewood - but I honestly don't know. I wouldn't be expecting Brazilian rosewood on a budget-model Duolian.
I have a friend who had a "younger" 14-fret Duolian, which when Dave King did a neck reset, to my friend it was an early one with a mahogany neck (and it had a staped Duolian logo). I'll see if I have any pictures of it (on my home PC).

Turns out the bass side of the slot head was broken off and the dealer didn't take note until I asked him to double check for breaks or cracks. I was working a trade and stopped short of shipping to him. He has another guy willing to pay the asking price even after seeing the damage to the head. Would need total restoration of the head and I do not want to deal with anymore repair stuff as I have two acoustics already in line for repairs that isn't happening. Too bad as the Neck was one of a kind.
