I purchased an old Dobro at an auction last week. I cannot find any model or serial numbers anywhere. Inside the left facing F hole, there is a small red circle with some markings in the middle that illegible. The only on the outside is on the resonator. It says Licensed by National Dobro Corporation. Any help would be appreciated. I cannot find a way to add pictures. I would appreciate advice on that as well. Thanks.

Is there a link to the auction site? They may still have a picture posted that we can see. Pete.
How old do you think it is?
And how was it described in the catalogue?

It was a local auction where I’m from. It had no listing. It looks like 1950’s to me.

I think the name ‘ National Dobro’ was used from 1936 to 1943, so this must be between those dates. ( sometimes old parts were use in the 50s and 60s to make the odd instrument but until we see a picture it’s hard to say) Pete
I am not good with computers so will try to describe how you post pics, have you ever put a video on YouTube? A 1 minuet video would tell us all we need to know.

Click 'reply' (not quick reply). Either 'add attachment' or hover over the image icon and it will say 'insert image'.

I've never posted on You tube. If there was an attachment tab on this forum I could send pictures or video.

Hi 88,
Welcome to our forum.I cannot identify your guitar exactly, but I think it comes from around 1939 and most likely would have been made by Regal. It could have been branded with various company names, but the legal jargon on the coverplate leads me to Regal. I think it may have originally been made without a resonator and what I think is a Dobro-style resonator was fitted later. If it is what I think it is, these are now known as faux resonator guitars. The headstock is not in keeping with what I know about 1939 Regals, but there are always anomalies and it may be the coverplate that is throwing me.
What you are calling the resonator is in fact the coverplate. The resonator is underneath the coverplate.
I hope that is helpful.

Thanks Michael. That is more than I knew. Would their happen to be anything underneath the coverplate that would help identify further?

Ok. I did watch a You Tube video of a 1939 Regal/ Montgomery Ward that had the same headstock with no writing on it. The cover plate was different. Thanks again.
