Hi, The tailpiece on my 1937 Dobro model 27 14 fret has given up the ghost, breaking in the usual place. Can anyone recommend a worthy replacement? Preferably nickel plated brass.
Thanks Chris ‘I love slide me’

Hi there !
Is it a standard National type tailpiece, or maybe something by Kay, or what ?
Photos would help.

Hi again !
I’d say the closest copies of the originals are Far Eastern ones - except that they only seem to do chrome-plated ones. But would you notice a chrome-plated one isn’t nickel-plated, in a painted guitar ? I’m not convinced. Yes, of course you’d notice a chrome tailpiece on a nickel-plated guitar though

Or find someone with a laser-welder to join those piece back together. I got the tailpiece from my all-steel 1930 Style O repaired (well, the tailpiece was brass !!) with a laser-welder in a Dental Lab, as a special favour. That was 5years ago and it’s still jolding up to 13-56 strings up to full standard E tuning

Chris, I would try to get that repaired if you can. Dobro tailpieces are not identical to National tailpieces. If you want to keep that guitar original, you will find most of the current tailpieces, (I am aware of), are made like National tailpieces. Your Dobro version has a very simple rounded termination at the end where the strap button hole is. The National version is more ornate. Laser weld or send to NRP.

Thanks rbe, Can it be repaired successfully? When it broke the tension seemed to be enormous. I can’t find anything else off the shelf which looks right. Regards Chris

Yes, it can be repaired quite successfully.
I had the tailpiece from my 1930 all-steel Style O repaired at a dental lab, with a laser-welder - almost 5yrs ago to the day. It's held up to the tension of 13-56 strings, tuned fully up to standard E tuning pitch all that time - and never showed any signs of weakening.

Repaired by NRP. Brazed, cleaned up, polished and replated in nickel. Original Dobro tailpiece.
