Someone just brought me a Central European 7 string guitar (Russian probably) and I was amazed to find the ‘correct ‘ tuning is a variation on open G., D.G.B.D.G.B.D, basically Dobro tuning with a bottom D. I think the owner will probably tune it like a modern 7 string ( standard with a low B) Pete

They used to be quite popular in (post-)Soviet countries 20-30+ years ago. My grandpa used to play one when I was a little boy. I guess they aren't that much popular now though.

They’re sometimes tuned with a C in place of one of the Ds, other variants too, I’m sure…

I had a similar thing back a decade or two ago, put some modern strings on it and detuned for a while to mess around with slide (Very woody tone), one night there was an almighty noise when it self destructed and the bridge flew towards the moon, can't say I miss it.

the bridge flew towards the moon, can't say I miss it. Lee Instruments were definitely involved in the space race , here a pic of a Russian balalaika with a Sputnik and Vostok rocket , no moon as yet, so before the US started Apollo? Pete
