Though you can’t see it the head of this bass has a clumsy repair ( lots of glue and screws!) The head will need to come off and it’s possible that I may put a pair of ‘wings’ each side to strengthen it and a 1mm ply over the head. This means I could change the number of strings as the old holes will disappear. The neck is a good 48mm at the nut, so plenty of room there, though the finger board is much wider than a ‘standard’ guitar as you go up the neck, so the strings would end up a little farther in from the edge than I would like if it turns into a 6 string guitar with Standard string spacing. Aha, with your skills you might be able to convert that into a Big Joe 9 stringer baritonish beast. Dependent on scale length you might have to talk to Neil at Newtone to make longer strings for you, too.

Well, a well might well fit, there is just room for a 9 1/2” cone, but it is a 34” scale so as PD says I might have to get special strings. But I am tempted...... The bridge is fairly high ( compared with a standard acoustic) so it would work without resetting the neck, though the strings will end up a little closer to the cover plate than I would like. Also the angle over the bridge will be very shallow. A standard tailpiece will end up close to the handrest ,so a short t/piece might have to be used. Pause for thought

The bridge would be a bit low, so I think it will turn back into a bass. I don’t trust the repair that was done some years ago, so I have reinforced the sides with 2 ‘wings’ these go across the old brake. A routered hole will have a plug to strengthen the centre. A piece of thin birch ply (1.3mm I think) will glue on the back, a thinner piece ( yes they make it very thin) on the face. This ‘wood sandwich’ will be very strong Pete

So next a quick clean, ( wash hands or use gloves, a greasy thumb print can look out of place) a light rub down with fine glass paper. Next a damp cloth, this will raise the grain, then , when dry another rub down with fine ( 250- 300 grit of finer) glass paper and a coat of primer. If,like me you are too mean to go and buy a grain filler, some grain may show through, you can minimise this with several coats but these things take a long time to dry and even a glass like finish may look a little ‘grainy ‘ after a week or two. No paint just the right colour, so a little black and a little russet brown Now I will leave it a few days to dry before I mask the head and do it in black Pete

Head now has ( after several coats and a few rub downs with 1200 wet-and-dry) a gloss finish and waiting for an Ibanez logo. For £5 I got 4 logos, they are a little on the large size, but I am too mean to spend any more money on this guitar, so a very large logo will go on as soon as the head is dry ( usually about a week, but I if today’s weather carries on , it’s 30 C. here at the moment, tomorrow) The logo is self adhesive ( I was hoping for a water-slide) , hopefully it won’t bubble up when some lacquer goes on as the experimental logo on the broken guitar top has. ( The bubbles are very small ) Pete

Well , it’s back in one piece and the electrics work. So I guess I need to find someone who wants it! ( I am not a fan of ‘acoustic bass guitar ‘ they can’t really make enough noise unless they are plugged in, though I guess for home practice they could be useful, I’m sure others have different ideas) Pete

I'm confused !
I thought you were turning it into a resonator bass ??

That was my first intention. The neck angle was a too small to use a standard cover plate (I could have sunk it into the top, but thought it would look odd) then there was the massive width of the finger board at the body, the strings ( with a standard 10 or 11mm spacing at the bridge) would be 5-7mm from the edge of the finger board at the 20th fret. So I’m sorry to say it’s back as a bass! I still want to turn a bass into a reso ,but I think a 4 string will be better. Pete Sorry for any disappointment, if anyone has an acoustic 4 string bass with a smashed top, let me know.
