Hello, Can anyone advise me as to the safest way to remove the sound hole covers from a 1937 wood bodied Dobro? They are currently stuck fast and presumably have been stuck in with glue? I’ve thought about warming the outer ring part with a soldering iron, but wanted to check here first. Any advice would be appreciated. Regards Chris ‘I love slide me’

If you've got the coverplate off you could give them a gentle push from inside. I wouldn't be suprised if they were glued in with old fashioned hot glue, my last 30's dobro had a glued in cone too. Be careful though, the covers are quite thin.

Thanks Davey, I haven’t taken the Cover plate off, so maybe best to leave it alone until it has to come off for a very good reason. I was just going to see what rings with no screens looked like and maybe route a pickup wire through one of the holes. Regards Chris ‘I love slide me’

Maybe route the wire via the coverplate instead. TT

Chris, rings with no screens probably won't look great on that guitar because the wood won't have been cut as neatly as modern Dobros are. If the screens are glued in, be careful because you might damage the wood or buckle the screens trying to move them. They have obviously been there for a while and want to stay.

Thanks Michael, I do have some Beard rings without the mesh but they are probably too ‘new’ looking. I’ll have to get over myself and leave things as they are l think. They really are stuck in fast. Regards Chris ‘I love slide me’

Personally I prefer the to leave the "Dobro monocle glasses" in the place they were designed for. However, when spirits are high I do like to wear them, complete with mesh, as monocle glasses. It's a guaranteed way to make my audience with roar with laughter or walk out! Many years ago at DobroFest in Slovakia I started quite a fashion with my Dobro glasses look.
