I note that Bax too seem to have identified a way to surf around the red tape. I bought an Arturia midi keyboard last year from them and they were great, even when I took them to task for advertising a qualifying free delivery threshold and subsequently trying to charge me! Their prices seem to shame Thomann too but I believe Bax are Netherlands based? I am aware they have at least one distribution warehouse in The UK which must be a part of their process?
Although I know there is some protocol that traders have to sign up for together with investment in paperwork and other complications representing overheads, but really it shouldn't it be as simple as not charging VAT on exports and thus burdening the customer with a similar cost at his/her/other end? That being the case, the only "beneficiaries" at the consumer's expense are the logistics organisations that have had Customs and Excise's work dumped upon them. I suppose that's a bit simplistic, but deducting VAT at source is how my recent transaction with a relatively tiny German engineering firm went for me. The website was configured to do it.

Hello, I'm in France, and regarding second hand guitars and all types of goods coming from outside the EU, I'm sure VAT (+ customs) applies on the price of the guitars + shipping + insurance . So I guess it's the same principle in UK. It applies also on guitars sent to USA for a repair, even under warranty. I met a guy (a brit living in France) who had bought a brand new NRP in EU, so he paid the EU VAT. Some years later he sent his NRP to California for a repair under warranty, and when the guitar was back in France, he had to pay the VAT again on the declared value of the guitar !!
I have some issue with the finish a NRP M1 I bought used years ago (from the late Chris Steinhauer). NRP would refinish the guitar for free, but I can't manage to organize the shipping and avoid paying the VAT when the guitar will come back to France.

according to the late George Harrison--
"1,2,3,4
Hrmm!
1,2...
1,2,3,4.
Let me tell you how it will be There's one for you, nineteen for me Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Should five per cent appear too small Be thankful I don't take it all Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat If you get too cold I'll tax the heat If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
Taxman!
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson) If you don't want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath) Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die Declare the pennies on your eyes Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me
Taxman!"
the rumor mill has it the melody was inspired by the theme song to 1960's TV show Batman
