My first cigar box with a 6” cone sounded ok, so a second is on the bench . As you can see the cone will have to be squeezed in , but the box is made of better (and thicker) than average ply so a couple of millimetres off each side should be fine. Pete

No, I don’t smoke. I will be collecting what’s left after they have been smoked ( might be a drag?) as I may make the neck out of ash, though it might be a bit of a fag*

* fag in British English can mean hard work Or a cigarette Or a younger pupil who works for an older boy at private school
There are more....

Hi Neilm , I have been repairing (and making) guitars for a long time and at one point repaired for Busker Guitars ( no longer trading in guitars) and was fortunate enough to get some spare old cones when Busker stopped doing guitars. 6” uke cones and sets of 3 x 6” cones for Tricone National style guitars are available from several suppliers. The neck stick will be fixed outside to the back of the box , this gives more space inside which should help with the tone. Most Cigar BGs have little acoustic tone and can’t be played with other instruments without an amp , they are just too quiet ( at least the ones I have played) . My Mark 1 is on Tin Can Ally at the moment so you can see how the neck will be fitted . I will post some pics as I go along, though I have several unfinished projects at the moment so it could take a while! Pete

Hi Pete...i`ll take a look at tin can alley.....i have a Busker tricone and the size of cones would be perfect.....The first one i ever made, which is pretty terrible but i would never part with it, has the best acoustic tone of any i`ve made, and i`ve made dozens.....no idea why or how it was pure beginners luck....take a look at @deadbod guitars of facebook if you have it,,,,,,its a facebook thing my daughter made for me....its not a selling page so i hope its allowed to mention it on here.

Hi again Pete....that neck outside of the box idea is genius.....i have a couple of quite thing cigar boxes that i havent used because of the neck.....in the spirit of cigar box building i would like to steal your idea ( if you are ok with it). ve also wound my own pickups a few times on a conveted sewing machine, but can be very frustrating but great when it works.

Very glad if my idea comes in handy. I have made the heal a little larger than usual and just screwed it on, this makes neck angle adjustment easier than usual.
There is a (very) short video of me playing the Mark 1 on this section of the forum. Its one of the first posts
The thread is called, ‘ Soon to be Finished? Cigar box guitar ‘

Made this today, ok it’s not a ‘cigar box guitar’ it’s a ukulele. I promise the next one will be a cigar box guitar, 3 strings, pickup all the usual stuff Pete

Now the neck, do I leave it parallel ( most CBGs seem to have parallel necks) or taper it ( like a real guitar) Pete Looks like it will be parallel, though I think it would probably feel better tapered, parallel will simplify fretting etc.

Not sure about the neck yet. The box is fairly strong, so I don’t think I will have to have a piece of wood running from one end to the other. However neck adjustment on mark 1 was made very easy because of the way it fitted so I may do something similar . Pete

Probably something like this. The box is unusually strong and deep for a cigar box, and I could have done a more elegant job ( like an internal neck stick like many CBGs) but I still feel that the more space inside, the better the bass response will be. Pete It could also be a homage to Richard Rogers, who like to but structural elements on the outside.
