l bought a new set of NRP tricones as l may have to replace one cone from 1940. L thought that the t bridge would just fit in but no. the nub is a bit big for the cone hole and does not fit stock. Any suggestion on how to make it fit please?

Hi there !
I'm pretty sure you just need to make the hole in the centre of the cone, a little bit bigger.
Please wait until a few knowledgeable people chime in first though - especially as the best way to enlargen the hole. I am talking only slightly widening the hole. You just need to do that in a way that doesn't squash the cone in the process.

Hi banjo. If you're mixing cones maybe check the height of them. I think I've read on the forum that not all cones are identical. Let us know how you get on. 😊👍🎸

the NRP tri cones are a bit higher due to being new i guiess, had to lower the saddle a bit but its playing good with all three new cones in at the moment . The neck had a little material removed to round it but it wasnt overdone and it is symmetrical. the cone with a hide glue repair on the treble side sounded a bit stiff before and l wasnt sure and wanted to fcompare the two . it is ringing more with new cone but not that much better ovewrall, maybe just give some time to settle and see what happens. l opened the holes by using an awl to slightly widen . thank you

Hi olebanjoguy,
Can't really comment without seeing some photos or video of the guitar, the cones, the reason you replaced one of them, how it looks now...etc.

l was aking how to put new cones in as the holes were a bit small. did it myself by burnishing with an awl and it sounds great. these are the original cones. l guess they compress is the difference in cone hieght by 4mm.

Sorry to discover another good old Triplate missing his original cones... Before anything, I will ask to Marc Schoenberger to peep an eye on these pictures, to see if sometning can be done. Maybe he could find another one to replace the missing one, or bring back this one to glory with carful cleanning and reshaping (these cones are too thin to be handle by someone who doesn't have his experience). If he realy can't do nothing, and if I was lucky enough to have such a so beautiful guitar; I will contact mike Lewis from "Fine Resophonics" in Paris France, to ask him if he will send you a set of his cones. I had these cones in hand, and even if this forum never falls in vain comparisons, NRP's cones aren't the same cones than the old ones. Mike's cones are incredible. (and perhaps he can save your damaged cone, or find a decent old one? as everithing has to be done for saving these old cones)
I have an old squareneck bringed back to life by Mike, as the old cones were ruined when I've got this one, I have two other guitars with NRP's sets of cones, from the Don Young era, and recent ones too, and to me they doesn't have that sweetness, something harsh stays here... When you got both in hands, you feel NRP's are stiff and rigid...;originals, and Mike's too seems like buterfly wings; you had to stop breathing, scared of see them fly away... This beautiful guitar deserves the best. For sure the NRP's will "work"... but if you want to know what can gives an original old National in the best condition, maybe, take a try...

HI vastapol, l have bought a new set of cones from nrp and l am trying them out. they are 4 mm taller than the old cones. Maybe they will compress a bit with use. im still trying to figure out how to place the original cones with the damaged one or add the new one. There is a tear in the top of one cone and they blobbed some hide glue on and it works . The two cones are fine and dont need to be repaired. I would love Mr. Schoenburger to make a round neck for it as i play bottle neck not lap style. Im not sure i can afford it and may not be the guy to take it to the finish line. It plays fine as a square neck and soon as i figure how to do a small vid i can post a sound bite. Ive left it original but i redid the neck finish with aniline and tru oil , and i think it looks nice. this guitar is probally to good for an old disabled banjo guy to keep.

Let us know how you get on. 😊👍🎸 l let the new cones settle in and had it playing nicely and today i put the old cones back in. I have the two perfect old cones on the bass side and one nrp cone on the treble. seems to sound good and a bit more bass and more sustain in mids. I felted the two old cones and the hieght difference is not noticeable now after reshaping anbd it seems to be settling in nicely. bought some K J Phelps music and gettin into it.
