For years i have played on my guitars using a plectrum ( with occasional fingerpick use on the accoustics) .but over the past year I have got rid of the plectrum for almost everything! I am finding that on the Coodercaster with the lapsteel pickup it is so sensitive to how it is plucked that it is really improving my technique.

I did the same about 30 years ago Jono- at the same time that I moved on (most of) my effects pedals. It wasn't about keeping it simple as in guitar plus amp, it was and remains more a case of throwing away crutches. Now I'm just as happy to use a plectrum as finger pick, but I'm mostly fingerstyle these days, on electric too. What works for Jeff Beck ...
Have you tried bone picks? An American friend wised me up to them, and I only use that type nowadays.

What ever you feel most comfortable with is probably best for you. Having said that, I think loud electric slide is probably easier to control without a plectrum . There is a lot of unwanted noise from unplayed strings and ( with my style of guitar) I use my thumb and fingers to mute strings I don’t want to sound. If you have always used a pick you may have adapted your technique to get over this, but for me it’s fingers every time. Pete

Pierre Bensusan gives a talk/lesson on this on You Tube. Although he is a DADGAD player his stuff is top notch.

Jono, the last time I used a plectrum was when I was 13 years old and I couldn't use it properly then. Been playing bass with fingers for most of my playing life* so when I went to slide guitar I didn't even think of using a plectrum. Did try a thumbick and finger picks for about 3 hours - nah, not for me - they hurt and no control whatsoever. Like Pete says - whatever is most comfortable for you. * I was asked to play bass with a pick on a studio track once. That didn't work either, particularly as our singer/guitarist fell on the floor laughing, pointing at me shouting "Look at him with a plecky! He looks and sounds like a fish with tits!". The track was then recorded with me using my fingers.

Very microphonic pickups, also like a good horseshoe they all expose the player, good and bad bits.
