Hi there !
I have a friend (yeah, no jokes !) who is having health issues, who feels now is the time to sell his guitars, as no family members are interested in them BUT they will be interested in the proceeds of the sale !).
I haven't physically seen him for a good number of years AND haven't seen his guitars either - but he phoned me asking for my help.
Guitars that might interest those here, are :
1937 National Style 97 - squareneck - but was re-necked by Mike Lewis, of Fine Resophonic guitars (so will likely be amazing !). The original neck will be included.
1930(-ish) National Style O - he called it 1930, but also says it has Variation 4 etching pattern !
I don't yet have pictures - BUT hope to have them in the next few days. My friend's health is such that he needs someone else to photograph the guitars for him. He does know the value of these guitars, so the Style 97, for instance will likely only appeal to someone knowing the sort of money these would attract. I'm hoping Mike Lewis might be able to offer some insight into this guitar at some point.
He also has a 1920's Stella 12-String guitar (apparantly photo'd and coming from the Chinery collection), and a 1920's (or was it 1930's ?) Gibson L4 archtop acoustic, with round soundhole - I think he said he bought from Steve Philips (yes, him).
If anyone thinks they might be SERIOUSLY interested in any of these guitars (and he says he has others for sale), then PM me, and I'll pass on the contact details to my friend.

Hi Richard,
I spoke with John on the phone a few days ago and suggested he put them on here, so it is good that you have done it for him.
Are there any photos that John could send us?
You have a typo in your post that makes it confusing. >>....was re-necked by Mike Lewis, or Fine Resophonic guitars<< I am assuming you mean "of Fine Resophonic".

Having chatted with John's friend, Jon, who has been helping John so far, the latest thought is to put all the guitars (apparently about 18 guitars, only 2 Nationals though) up for auction - most likely the auction house that was used to sell Bukka White's National Duolian.
I'll post a link to that if & when that gets organised.

A note from Mike Lewis.... It's almost impossible to find a round neck 97, so this is an interesting guitar to buy. The neck is hand made to my old tricone specs including the shape of the headstock! This is a beautiful instrument. Shine On Michael

And the Style O - 1930, Variation 2 etching pattern (with etched border) I don't know yet if any parts of the body are anything other than brass, under the nickel-plating.

Any idea of the value of both Nationals? Not just a casual query
Cheers

Wow! Those are beautiful guitars. Do the people who are fortunate enough to be able to buy such instruments play them, or do they end up in glass cases? No judgement implied; I am genuinely interested. I think I would be too nervous of damaging them to play them.
Stay safe folks!

Hi there !
Sorry, but vitage Nationals are fairly bomb-proof ! You shouldn't worry about playing them. You might consider NOT taking them to gigs though, in case they get stolen.
It would be a shame for guitars to be in glass cases, never to be played again. I feel bad enough when one of my guitars has been in it's case and/or unplayed for more than a week !

The surfer girl especially is a work of art. Just beautiful to look at with the bonus of great sounds! (Hopefully) I sent a screen shot to an artist friend of mine to see if I could get something similar done to one of my guitars, he wasn't keen!
Best wishes to you all, John

Best wishes to you all, John John, These images were sandblasted and then enamel paint was used for the colours. It is really beautiful work and not easy to achieve without it looking tacky. Here is a page from Mark Makin's book "Palm Trees, Senoritas & Rocket Ships!" that shows the graphic image clearly. Shine On Michael
