Shirley Collins - Sweet Greens & Blues - Jools Holland Show "Later"
For those who don't know, Shirley Collins was there in Como, Mississippi, in 1959 with Alan Lomax when he recorded Mississippi Fred McDowell.
In 1959, folklorists Alan Lomax and Shirley Collins came to a farm near Como, Mississippi. There they would discover a slide guitarist of singular power and uncommon elegance, a 51-year-old sharecropper by the name of Fred McDowell. Lomax — who had been involved in discovering Son House, Lead Belly and Muddy Waters, among many others — listened to McDowell play, then took out a notebook and scribbled a single word: “Perfect.”

Her book “America over the Water” gives more information on the 59 Mississippi trip and her relationship with Alan Lomax. An interesting read. Fred was just an accident, invited over by next door neighbours the Turners where Alan was recording

Damn - just ordered the book!
Having read Alan Lomax's 'The Land Where the Blues Began' recently, it'll be interesting to compare the two - particularly as the writers came from two different cultures and backgrounds.

I haven't really listened to her recordings from the 60s, but her two recent records, Lodestar a couple of years ago and Heart's Ease this year, are both wonderful. Well worth spending time with..

Just loved her recollection about Fred coming out of the woods into a clearing - priceless
Ian Kearey on guitar - he has a bit of a pedigree to say the least
Cheers

Some years ago Shirley appeared on the Radio2 Paul Jones Blues show. I have it ( somewhere) on cassette tape ,and listened to it many times in the car. Sadly all my cassette players have worn out and the new ( not so new ,but less than 15years old) car only a CD player. As you might expect, much talk of Fred Mc. Pete

Pete, I remember that well. Shirley was also a guest on Cerys Matthews BBC Radio 2 show last year with much talk of Fred. I'm sure it is still available to hear on the iPlayer.

Shine On Michael Of coarse I heard that interview too, but I didn’t remember it so fondly. I think it may have been just part of the program and the Paul Jones one was longer? Can’t find it on iPlayer, but it may be buried in there somewhere. Pete

chromatic found the Cerys M program, (just clips , but you get the flavour) thanks for that. Pete As I recalled, not a long interview and a few not quite blues tunes thrown in

Shirley Collins is one of the best. Her album Folk Roots: New Routes is one of my all time favourites; not just wonderful singing but also Davey Graham on guitar. It is a gem.
