A 15watter through a good speaker is (at full volume) is very loud in a small venue ( most of my gigs these days are in very small venues) The big problem is taming the beast. Old style amps are more of a problem than new master volumes ones which give a flavour of an amp at full throttle, though often not quite the real thing. I have used a power soak (a sort of dummy speaker that cuts the power to the main speaker) an a half voltage switch, but both these rob you of speaker distortion. Someone needs to make a good sounding very inefficient speaker, so 30watts sounds like 15, maybe I could even get to use my AC30. Pete

Never discount loudspeaker compression.

Speaker or cone compression is a major part of what most of us consider desirable classic blues rock guitar tone.

I am currently having this built for me by Modulas Amplification ( no affiliation) on the East coast of Scotland. it is designed around the Fender Tweed Deluxe 5E3 circuit but with a Dumble" type modification on it that gives it more headroom its 20w max and has an attenuator on it select anything between 1w and 20w. looking forward to trying it out .. That sounds great pretty sure you will love it. I got hospitalised 29/7 and was in for 6 weeks very ill. As a homecoming gift I commissioned a hand wired 5E3 with built in global volume attenuator, switch to use normal gain or less gain, and a hand built cab from friends in Auckland on the NZ Guitars forum. This amp has kept me finding different tones since, absolutely wonderful amp, the interaction between the 3 controls is amazing. Good luck on yours IMG_1899 by Laurie Franks, on Flickr Tweed Deluxe 2 by Laurie Franks, on Flickr

That's really pretty sweet. At the end of the day, my prejudice is <for> combo amplifiers rather than separates, but Jon's little amp will allow him to audition the effects of different loudspeakers. I'd still go for a grab 'n' go though.

I considered a combo BUT the EVM12L Speaker it is going through is MEGA heavy ..
this an interesting video explaing the "interaction" between the channel being used and the unused channel on the 5E3 have set the video where the guy starts playing.. before that it goes quite deep into explaining about the amp. it also explains how you can jumper the channels.

Very interesting and instructive. One thing I would say is that the tone control is not as simple as he suggests. Yes, from 5 to 10 treble increases. Yes, when the volume is up to 10/11/12 the tone does very little from 5 up. However from 5 down to 0 it will remove treble (and a little gain). The standard Tweed tone is basically in 2 halves. Middle to 0 it removes treble to earth, as you turn up it lets the treble that can’t get past the volume control ‘jump’ around it. When the volume is fully up, there is no resistance to the treble so it’s like having the tone fully up. Pete

this should keep you busy when waiting for delivery. not rocket science, but required reading for getting all this circuit makes possible.... robrobinette.com/How_The_5E3_Deluxe_Works.htmhave a 5E3 circuit mod that was built to burn 6L6 rather than 6V6. also massively over spec'ed transformers, which also raise saturation levels dramatically. using bright/normal jumper options and interactive volume pots, lotsa different tones available in a "sweet spot" wide as the English Channel. Land of Oz carriage driver to Dorothy--“There’s only one of him and he’s it. He’s the horse of a different color you’ve heard tell about.” more headroom than an NBA player, due to no negative feedback circuit design* and 6L6, but woefully loud if you want to get dirt from it. think you will like this circuit, mitchfit * think Vox AC30

Oversized transformers is what helped to make the old Danelectro amps so knarley. It’s a point worth remembering when DIY-ing

All of the above advice is spot on, but definitely explore the channel jumping, it really thickens up the tone. I have been playing this all night with my Jazzmaster rhythm channel Neil Young dirt ala Powderfinger. 20191129_223605 by Laurie Franks, on Flickr

As an aside, if you choose to jumper channels that are out of phase with one another, you could also introduce a compressor over that link that has its input out of phase with its output such as the MXR DynaComp, and you can then blend wet with dry.

This is an interesting thread and there is lots of good advice being given by people that definitely know their stuff, but for me it is all too complicated.
All of my amps are small Champ type amps with no tone controls or reverb, just a jack socket and and volume control. I use no effects or processors of any type and control my sound with the volume and tone on my guitar. For me, all processors of any kind dilute the sound and anything too complicated in the settings is, well just too complicated!
I have tried stuff along the way and occasionally in a recording situation I use something, like the wah wah pedal on Big Wind, but generally I like my electric sound to be as pure as possible. I might be a bit of an old timer, but I can’t believe what guitarists use these days, and so much of it is there to help them sound like guitarists that used nothing apart from a guitar and amp..
Great valve/tube amp, great guitar, and the rest is in the playing.
Jono, your new amp looks beautiful!
